Rose Melberg- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca 9/8/23 Schoeps Audience Master Audio Tiger Trap Softies

I was very excited to see this show- I have been a huge AGSFB fan for over 10 years, and adding Rose to the show was a big bonus…. unfortunately, some things didn’t work out too well with the taping thing.
First one was this set. I rarely have enough time to be 100% prepared for a show. It takes a lot of time charging battery packs and prepping memory cards for 4-6 cameras, plus prepping the audio gear. I thought I had it all dialed in.. right before I left, I checked the audio recorder and it showed 8:12- 8 hours and 12 min! Plenty of memory for the show. Well, that was actually 8 minutes and 12 seconds left on the recorder.
After (so I thought) recording the opener, I checked my recorder and it shut off. This was minutes before Rose was going to start, then I realized that the recorder’s memory was full. So I panic and start deleting files as fast as I can (including the opener! D’oh!). As a result, I missed the first 10min of the set or so. Ugh, I hate taping chaos.
Also, the PA did not seem to be working on the left side, which is where I should have been getting most of my vocals.. so although the recording sounds nice, the vocals are oddly distant.
Oh well, there are days like these. I don’t even know if I am going to post the AGSFB set- I need to figure out how to make it listenable.

Kelly Slusher- Fig Tree, Roseville Ca 9/1/23 Digital audio master w/ Schoeps Mics Crash and Britany

Well the theme so far this week is “women who used to be in well-known bands playing a rare solo set” apparently. That will change tomorrow, but let’s roll with it for now.
I rarely take my kids to a live performance because they are not interested and it becomes a distraction, but it was my birthday the day before and we were going to my birthday dinner in Roseville. It’s the one time per year where I actually get my way, so off we went. Of course, we got there late because the 8 year old was slow getting out the door, but we made it. If you want to hear (and see) the entire set, it is on fig tree’s facebook. This one sounds better.
Kelly worked for 3 years on animation that accompanied the songs, and it was really entertaining. The Fig Tree is a comfortable hangout- I don’t think I have ever taped while lounging on a couch. Highly recommended.
Kids were entertained too- they had board games there. So 2 thumbs up for Fig Tree.

Lesdystics- Sutter’s Landing Skate Park, Sacramento Ca. 8/26/23 4K UHD Master Schoeps Audio

Late post today- we were without internet for about a day over here in OV, just got it back. Here’s a quick post, and I will follow it up with a bonus one tonight.
Lesdystics were the last band to play at the show last Saturday. Donni Segur asked me to come out and video and things fell into place so I could go, which is rare. He wants only the last song posted, so I’ll go with it. I have to say that Don playing drums after having brain stem surgery less than a year ago is pretty amazing.

Lesser Sons- Sutter’s Landing Skate Park, Sacramento Ca. 8/26/23 4K UHD Master

yesterday was a busy day- coaching soccer, then to Tim Soriano’s celebration of life- it was nice seeing old friends there. Donni Segur had told me about this show at the skate park, so I figured I would stop in after Tim’s celebration and see the band he was drumming for (Lesdystics). Well, they were running way late and it was sweltering hot in there… but I am so glad I stuck it out. I was able to see these guys as a result.
First off, this band is great. More about them in a bit. Not only that, but these kids came up right before them to play a couple songs and were amazing! I was asking my long time soundman pal John Taylor who the hell they were.. nobody knew… come to find out, it was Josh from Lesser Sons’ son’s band (say that fast 3 times) called Wave Decay. I am definitely leaving the house to see them when they play next.. and that is a bold statement coming from me.
On to Lesser Sons. They grabbed me from the first song. I got set up in a hurry to film and missed some of the beginning of the set. Not only that, but my sound levels looked funny (all brickwalled) during the first song or 2, so I checked my settings.. my mic attenuator was not on and it sounded like trash. I fixed it and here is the 23 minutes of good audio. If anyone wants the distorted start of set, let me know.
Lesser sons are:
Jacob Poindexter- formerly of Pummel and Revelry on vocals
Josh Bailey- formerly of Hung on guitar
Dave Girard- formerly of A Single Second and Drowning Adam on drums
Clint- formerly of Drowning Adam on bass
Joe Altamirano (main songwriter?) on guitar.
So basically an all star sacramento punk/metal lineup. No wonder why they are so good. They have an album up on soundcloud as well.

Free tacos were good too.

Mohama Saz- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 8/18/23 4K UHD Multicam w/ Schoeps Audio Spanish Psych

Here’s something a little different to break up the endless stream of old metal and gilman soundboard posts- a psych band that Anonymous & I taped at the Cafe last year.
Our good friend Ted Mattes (you have probably heard one of his recordings- legendary) asked either Me or Anonymous to cover this show at the cafe last year and we both ended up going. I did a 4 camera shot and Anonymous used his Schoeps MK4s and it turned out pretty nice.
Never heard of the band? I hadn’t either. Here is what Discogs has to say: “Spanish psychedelic rock group with heavy influences of mediterranean and Middle East music, active since summer 2014, founded by Adrián Ceballos and Javier Alonso.”

Los Sindes- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 8/18/23 Schoeps Audio Master

Here’s another one from last Friday’s show at the Cafe. I was not prepared for this band- they were so good, and they sound like no one else in Sacramento- alternative/jangly new wavish type stuff with some of that early cult/killing joke guitar chorus at times. I like it!
Sorry about the fluctuations in quality. I was getting video cameras prepped so I had to duck down to get stuff out of my bag. I now know that the soundboard enclosure makes a ton of vibration noise.
I would definitely go see this band again.

Mother Muerte- Café Colonial, Sacramento Ca 8/18/23 Partial Set Schoeps Mics

Here’s something a bit different than the steady diet of early punk/metal (Wayne) and KALX in studio stuff(Rick) that I have been posting on weekdays for months. I actually attended a show last weekend for the first time in almost 2 months- Mohama Saz(Spain), Mother Muerte (Sac), and Los Sindes(Sac). It was nice to see the locals open the show. I missed part of this set because I was dicking around with my laptop, trying to get the multitrack setup ready and it just didn’t work out. Multitrack next time.
Mother Muerte was a 2 piece band with guitar/vocals and a drummer- I think I missed about 10min of the show.

Michael Dean Damron- Claimstake Brewing, Rancho Cordova, Ca 7/6/23 Schoeps digital master audience

I was planning on posting from another collection today, but we got heartbreaking news about Michael Dean Damron. Most recently, Michael was a solo artist who toured extensively- he played a show here in July of 2023 with Micah Schnabel and Vanessa Jean Speckman. He was also in the alt country band I Can Lick any Sonofabitch in the house from 2002-2013.

Michael passed away today from liver cancer. I was friends with him on facebook but I never got to see him perform, but I kept hearing about how great the shows were and how I should get out to one. Always go to the show, folks.

Thankfully, Anonymous was at his last show here in the Sacramento area. This is a phenomenal recording and performance. Thanks.

I will also post a link to his gofundme. I know he has a daughter, as she was helping her dad while in the hospital.
For folks in Portland, there is a benefit concert this Saturday (May 10) at Star Theater.
For folks outside of Portland, there are a couple of fundraisers that I will paste in facebook comments below

Owlfest 11 “This one goes to eleven!”, eleventh year of this homegrown festival in the California hills, this year was Heavy Metal themed inspired by Spinal Tap and most bands covered a metal song in that spirit. Over twenty-five acts grace the Owlfest stages over a three-day event with camping, vendors, and activities.
