Cypress Hill- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca 10/10/24 Schoeps Audio Only Partial Set

2 Aftershock posts today. This one is a partial audio-only set from Cypress Hill. Matt and I had a drink after the Teen Mortgage set and were walking literally from one end of the festival grounds to the other to see Biohazard. We came across Cypress Hill and caught about 20min of the set. The stage was a massive sea of people and my video is worthless (especially from a distance and after a drink), but I am pretty shocked that the audio is this good.
Kudos to the soundman who was able to make it sound amazing despite the less-than-stellar recording position. If I knew that Biohazard was going to be 15 min late for their set, I would have hung out at this stage longer…

Slayer- Aftershock Fest, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/24 4K Full Show Schoeps Audio Thrash Metal

Finally, here is the Slayer set from Thursday. I kept losing focus for about the first 15min and then I finally found the auto focus lock and it was pretty smooth sailing for the rest of the show. I had not used this camera in a couple years so it took a bit for me to fix the focus issue. Audio turned out pretty good as well- it was a bit light on guitar so I izotope’d it and I am pretty happy with it. Enjoy!

Teen Mortgage- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento 10/10/24 4K w/Schoeps Audio

Here’s where I screwed up (the first time) yesterday. After Descartes a Kant finished their set, I messaged my friend Matt and made arrangements to meet at the Coors Light stage so we could watch Gel’s set, which is where it (and I) was. Right? RIGHT?!?
No, both were wrong- both the stage I was at, and Gel’s set time. They had initially had Gel playing at 2:55 at the Coors Light stage, but they were moved at 4:15 which conflicted with Biohazard… but that’s not the worst part. I was at the wrong damned stage. Aftershock needs to clearly label these stages for the old folks like me.
So anyway, after much ado I head over to Coors Light and I find Teen Mortgage playing, who I also previewed before the fest and enjoyed and had planned to see. I ended up missing about 10min of the set (I think) while trying to figure out where the hell I was. Poor Matt went to Coors Light, could not find me (Because I didn’t know where the hell I was), and went to another stage. I owe him about 1,000 steps.
Anyway, Teen Mortgage were great. These 2 guys make a LOT of punky sludgy garagey noise. Any band that wears a Discharge truckers cap on stage can’t be all that bad. Also, this can be the audio quality you can expect for the rest of the Aftershock videos I post. Nice and full sounding schoeps audio.

Descartes a Kant- Aftershock Festival, Discovery Park, Sacramento Ca 10/10/24 4K Video master incomp

I went to Aftershock fest yesterday and had a blast! Hung out with my friend Matt, and saw a couple of friends(Scotty & Wayne) that I had not seen for a while.
Here’s a little teaser of what is coming up- it’s going to take some time to process and match up audio for the big bands, so here are 2 partial set posts today.
Right after I got in, I started wandering to the side stages since that’s where I usually live at these things early in the day, and I caught the very end of this band. I had listened to some of their stuff leading up to the fest and liked it alright. Kinda space rock sounding. Buuut… check it out at about the 1:20 mark… is she singing to a backing track? The mouth and the audio don’t match up. Odd.

Built to Spill- Harlow’s, Sacramento Ca 9/29/24 4K UHD w/Matrix Audio Nothing Wrong w/Love Full show

I had some folks over at the Pacific Northwest Music Archive site ask for this specifically, so here you go. It’s funny- I was there more for Quasi than BTS although I do like them- casual fan. I now know what it is like to be on the “casual fan” side of these complete album shows. I get all amped about them when they are my favorite albums, and people were stoked for this, so that’s cool.
Jim Mclain also video’d them with multiple cameras. If you want to see that version of the video, he should be posting it sooner or later. I would subscribe to his channel (after subscribing to mine, OF COURSE) so you don’t miss out.
Huge thanks to Anonymous #1 (the original Anonymous) for the Schoeps/soundboard audio matrix.

Quasi- Harlows, Sacramento Ca 9/29/24 4K UHD Complete show Schoeps Audio Janet Weiss Sleater Kinney

I missed Quasi’s performance of Featuring Birds at the Chapel this past summer because I had COVID, but this was a nice consolation prize. Brian (Abstract Entertainment) brought Built to Spill to town and they had Quasi along as the opener, and they played almost an hour! They even pulled out that killer instrumental song off of R&B Transmogrification- that was a treat!
My friend Jim Mclain also filmed with multiple cameras- sign up to his youtube channel if you want to see that version, once it gets posted.
Nice to partner with my OLD friend (since 1987!) Anonymous. Thanks for the audio, it sounds great. Vocals were a bit low to start the set.
One last thing- I didn’t have my sh*t together because I was talking to friends, so this cuts in during the first song and there is another cut toward the end when I had a battery swap. Jim’s will be complete.

U.D.O.- DNA Lounge, San Francisco Ca 9/20/24 Multicam Soundboard LiveStream Udo Dirkschneider Accept

Zoran Theodorovic asked me something yesterday and I had never really considered doing this. DNA Lounge broadcasts their live streams for all of their concerts- multicamera with soundboard audio. I have been cptruing many of them over the past couple years, but I didn’t feel right posting them. It’s not my work and all I did was screen record and save. But since DNA Lounge does not seem to save/archive these, let’s give posting one of these a shot. I have a ton of them- Anvil, Peelander-Z and more just in the last month. If DNA or anyone affiliated with the artist or venue want this pulled down, just use the contact form at sacramentomusicarchive dot com and I’ll pull it down faster than.. a shark? Sorry.
One more thing about the DNA streams- some of them can be really bad quality. It looks like they fixed up the cameras for this U.D.O. one. The board audio on this is killer as well. Most don’t come together this nicely.
I was planning on posting a Rodney video today- that will happen next weekend.

A Wilhelm Scream- Goldfield Trading Post, Sacramento Ca 9/18/24 Schoeps Audio Master

Tour Manager Doug Tuesday is being postponed to Thursday this week- so instead, you get something I recorded recently.
A Wilhelm Scream opened the Strung Out/Adolescents show last month. Through a series of really boring circumstances that I won’t go into, I did not have time to ask to video, so I recorded audio only. One thing about the sound that night- every band had drums and vocals high in the room mix with guitars barely audible in comparison. I have had to boost guitar with all 3 sets in izotope, which is rare/unheard of for audience recordings. Not bagging on the sound man, I know sound is a challenge there.. but how odd. Good set- what a stacked lineup with 3 touring bands, but it would have been nice to see a local opener on the bill.

Rebalance in Izotope Rx8: I didn’t save settings, but it was something like guitars and bass +5, vocals +2

Adolescents- Goldfield Trading Post, Sacramento 9/18/24 4k UHD Multicam w/Schoeps Audio punk

The Adolescents “co-headlined” that Strung Out show a couple weeks back, and it was a really great set. They were playing songs that they had not played for YEARS- Brats in Battalions, OC Confidential, and Lockdown America… then I checked the album I bought at the show. The new record has re-recordings of all those songs. Hm. Great set.
The audio sounds better on this one vs. Strung Out since I was closer to the stage. I was almost taken out by the pit a few times so I moved back for Strung Out. Too bad, this sounds way better.
One last thing- I made a massive mistake. The band started abruptly and I had to hurry to start the G9ii, and in the process I started it and immediately stopped it again. I thought I was filming away until about 9 minutes in- I see no recording indicator on the camera. The camera was powered on but not recording. D’oh! So for the first 10 min or so, you only get the 3 gopro angles, then the G9ii kicks in. Speaking of kicking, I was kicking myself for that screwup.
Features Adam Gomez from The Dickies on drums!

Strung Out- Goldfield Trading Post, Sacramento 9/18/24 4K UHD Multicam w/ Schoeps Audio Punk

Strung Out and the Adolescents came to Sac last week and my good friend Tromster asked me to video the show. The venue was really small for this lineup and I didn’t have a ticket… AND the website was vague about tickets being available on the day of the show. So I just rolled out and hoped for the best, which is unlike me. I usually buy tickets and not go to the show, vs. not buying a ticket and going. Once I got there, I saw one of my show going friends (David) holding a sign asking for tickets. That’s when I knew I was in trouble. Luckily, a nice person from Roseville (sorry, forgot your name) had 2 extras and in we both went.
I got lucky that the TM’s were also selling merch. Strung Out’s TM Jon was iffy about it and asks me “you aren’t going to post the entire show, right?” and I was errrr.. I usually do… and he finally just said screw it and let me go for it. I think the big merch line I was holding up helped speed up that decision, haha. Thanks Jon! Daniel Blume, the band’s drummer was super cool and might have some additional footage to work in here as well. So, more to come maybe.
Great show and I got some really good shots of the pit, which I usually ignore because it is behind me or too far from my angle to fit in. In a venue this small, it was hard to avoid.
