Son Volt- 3rd and Lindsley, Nashville Tn 9/27/98 xfer f/ DAT Soundboard-FM Clone Uncle Tupelo Farrar

Let’s do a Son Volt show for today’s On this Date in History. This one was a local Nashville radio FM broadcast. the mix isn’t perfect and it has the typical FM over compression so I don’t think that a rebalance would sound good either. It’s like, what do I do with this thing. Hahah. So here it is in all of its raw glory.

Son Volt were unf*ckwithable in this era. One of the all time greats.

I know that I haven’t pushed this much, but it’s coming. In order for me to continue archiving and sharing these concerts, I really need some help. Please make a tax deductible donation to the archive (top banner on the website)- one time donations happily accepted, or you can subscribe to the patreon for as little as $3 per month. Pleeease, I need this to pay my healthcare next year. Ha.

Deftones- Stockton Civic Center, Stockton Ca 9/20/98 xfer from 8mm master denoise upscale to 1080

Here’s another one from Gary ( @bootlegcowboys ). Go subscribe to his channel if you haven’t already- he is just a hair under 10k subscribers!
Gary let me know that he has that Janes Addiction de-shaked and posted to his channel, so I will link that one as a bonus post this weekend.
Here is a Deftones show, opening for RHCP in Stockton. This Stockton venue was way better than other venues in the area for video- Gary gets some killer closeups here. Thanks Gary!

Live Concert Video

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Stockton Civic Memorial Auditorium, Stockton, CA 9/20/98 xfer from master 8mm

Here’s another Gary Shurtleff video from the 90s. Man, he could bootleg video and get amazing results. This one took place in a smaller venue in Stockton which allowed for some great closeups. Check out gary’s channel at @bootlegcowboys
This one should look a bit cleaner than other videos out there since it is pulled right off the master, and the degrain was done in Adobe/neat video.

The Posies- Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco Ca. 9/19/98 Audio xfer DAT Soundboard Live LAST SHOW

Man, this is totally going to be a tl:dr.
So in 1998, The Posies announced that they were calling it a day. They announced their final show at Bottom of the Hill in SF, which was an odd choice of location since they are known as a Seattle band! B.O.T.H. shows are notoriously late- they usually go until 1:30-2am, which is really tough on out of towners like me (2 hours home).
This show was special- since it was The Posies “last show”, they kept playing and playing… and Ken got naked for one of the encores, and they ended up playing for almost 2 hours. They finally ended at 2:30am or so.
I get out of the venue with some of my friends… and MY CAR IS GONE. I think it has been stolen and start freaking out. One of my friends (Jason Smoliak or Jason Sherrett I think) offered to drive me around to try to find the car. It was on the block over- I was already delirious from lack of sleep!
So I start driving home. I get over the Bay Bridge and 80 is fucking CLOSED. They put me on 580 with no choice. I had no idea how to get home- remember, this was before GPS/Cell Phones were common. So I happen to see a sign for hwy 13 and head that way. At this point it is about 3:30am so I stop and call my wife on the pay phone to let her know I will be super late, and it goes to voicemail. What the hell.
I fight falling asleep at the wheel and finally make it home around 5 or 5:30am. I walk in the door and wife starts screaming “I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD!”. Well, pick up the damned phone. I get a whopping 2 or 3 hours sleep before the 3 and 5 year olds beat on my head to wake up.

Audio Live Concert

Wilco- On the Waterfront Festival, Rockford Il 9/4/98 xfer f/ DAT Soundboard clone Jeff Tweedy

Man, lots of audio this week. I’ll make it up with extra videos this weekend, including a really cool one tomorrow.

It was a choice between this and a Geraldine Fibbers DAT sbd from CBGB for today’s On This Date in History. I commented on the tape list that “JEFF ALIENATES THE CROWD (THEY OPENED FOR KENNY W.S.)” so I picked this one… but after listening again, I wouldn’t call it alienating. More like good-natured teasing. I was a bit too hyperbolic in my youth.

It’s a pretty nice mix, I didn’t need to do anything to fix it. I don’t recall where I got this one- it looks like the tape #s before this came from a trade with Steve Brothers, but all of those were from his master tape. Hmm.

PS: I know the image is from 2004. There are no photos/posters/anything from 1998 online.
