Elastica- Lolapalooza, Irvine Meadows, Irvine Ca 081495 DAT Master xfer Coresound Mics Alternative

Here’s the last Lollapalooza 95 show on this DAT. I taped more but they were all 2nd stage after this, I think. Anyway, this one is a little bassy, as most coresound recordings are.

Pavement- Lollapalooza, Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, Irvine Ca. 8/14/95 DAT Master xfer 2nd Stage

I wasn’t planning on posting this one today, but a few people asked me for it and it happened to be on the audio PC’s hard drive, already transferred from DAT. Awesome set- Opens with you’re killing me, includes Maybe Maybe, Box Elder, Forklift and a bunch of stuff off of Slanted and Enchanted. At the time, I thought it was the best show ever.

Jesus Lizard- Lollapalooza, Irvine Meadows Amphitheater, Irvine Ca. 8/14/95 Xfer from DAT Master Aud

I know a lot of my friends went to the Lolla show in Sacramento, but I was living in Whittier at the time so I went to Irvine. The one upside of going to Irvine was Pavement- they played a “deep cuts” set on the second stage after playing a set on the main stage earlier in the day. It was awesome and totally worth hanging at the second stage for a good part of the day.
Anyway, here is Jesus Lizard’s opening set. I think they opened, it was the first band I taped that day.

Swans- Roxy, Hollywood Ca. 8/10/95 Michael Gira xfer from DAT Master Audio R.I.P. Bill Rieflin

I am part of a northwest music facebook group, and I heard that Bill Rieflin passed away. I did not know who he was, so I looked him up… WOW. He was not only the drummer for many of my favorite bands (he was in SO MANY BANDS), but he was unbelievably talented. I tend to focus on drums a lot when listening to music, which is probably due to my cousin Tony Schwartz being a drummer in my formative years. I did not even realize that he was the drummer in this incarnation of The Swans that I saw until I looked up the band member timeline… and I recall that the drummer kicked ass.
So this was at the Roxy, who were a complete pain in the ass about taping. I had to smuggle the gear into the club, and then hide the DAT deck in my pocket (mics on eyeglasses). I set the levels at a “reasonable level” (levels used for Foo Fighters a couple weeks earlier at the same club… I check the deck about 15min in and the levels were PEGGED! Shit. In my haste to change levels without being seen, I unplug the mics. So I lose about 1-2min of the show.
So in summary, it was f*cking LOUD, is not great for the 1st 15min or so.

D.I. – The Barn, Riverside Ca 8/5/95 xfer from DAT Master Soundboard Complete Show Rebalanced

Man, this one was a tough one to prepare. I rebalanced it four times before being ok with it. It’s an odd mix- guitar and vocals are up in the mix, snare and bass buried.
I am a huge fan of the band- I have been recording their shows for 35(!) years. This one was a special set- when you see D.I. you usually get 45-60 minutes of the hits. On this night, they did songs off of State of Shock (which is rare in itself), but they were also writing new material that apparently never saw the light of day. There is a song in the set called Talk Show Murders that I don’t remember being released anywhere. It makes sense- the band didn’t release their next album of original material until 2007- 12 years later with a completely different lineup.
I shot video of about half the set. I need to get this synched up to it.

The Muffs, Queers and Cub- KALX Station ID Videos, Berkeley Ca August 1995 xfer from 8mm Master Tape

It’s a collections post! This one from Rick Sylvain’s KALX collection.

I was planning on continuing the Acoustic songs that I had been doing the last couple of months from Rick, but just yesterday Johnny Savage, who was also a DJ at KALX during the 90s, told me that he has full aircheck tapes of those shows which also includes interviews! Wow! So let’s put those aside and pull this one out.

It is really cool to not only see the KALX studio from back in 1995, but also seeing Kim and the rest of the bands having fun with this.
