One from my collection today. It looks like this one might be online already but with no lineage info. This is a DAT transferred off the VHS Hifi audio master, which is a smart way to timer tape audio back in the day.
This is a really good performance and funny interview.

I posted this demo about a month ago from Anonymous 2’s collection, but Mark Murray (who was in the band) let me know that the one I posted was a rough mix and he had a much better copy. Not only that, but he also had the unreleased Sloppy Seconds cover they did during the session. Thanks Mark! Mark also sent over a few other things from The Drags and other bands, so stay tuned for them.
For our collections post, we have this one from Rick Sylvain’s KALX archive. As you can see, there are a bunch of bands playing one (or a few) songs acoustic in the KALX studio. No dates noted for any of the performances. This is the Chills’ 2 song performance.

This one comes from Anonymous 2’s collection of local demos and such. I think this is the Drags that were from Citrus Heights/Sacramento area. There is only a sample of one of the 7″s they released on youtube and I could not match anything from this to that. So hopefully this is unique. I am sure that Mark Murray will let us know, as he was in the band! I have no song titles, no artwork. What you see is what Anon 2 has. There is a startling amount of tape hiss for being a “master” tape. That’s why I didn’t call this one a master- there’s no way, unless someone has a hiss-producing tape deck out there! Haha.
more info from Mark Murray: Some notes. This is actually before I joined the band. On this recording (must have been very early 1993) would be Honeyboy Wilson (Jason Dancer) – guitar/vox, Karlo Rossi (Karl Horton) – guitar, Ricky Drag (Rick Perego) – drums/backup vox and ? bass. I’ve never actually heard this before but it is a raw mix. The final demo has better vocals and sound quality (and less backup vocals) and was titled simply “Demo #1” Songs: Cindy & Me (about Cindy Crawford) Trailer Park Family I Don’t Miss Her Alley Trolls Time Bomb (Sloppy Seconds cover unreleased with super flat backups – there was talk of a Sloppy tribute album at the time…) We recorded 3 demos and 2 7″s. This is demo #1 rough mix.

In anticipation of tomorrow night’s show in SF, here is another one from Barry Ward’s collection. ABOUT YESTERDAY’S RKL POST– the band asked me to take it down. They might have something exciting planned with it, so stay tuned. If you happened to rip the audio before is disappeared, please keep it to yourself. Don’t be a dick and repost it. The band is totally cool and they need it offline. OK? This 2 camera, soundboard audio video was recorded around the time that Reactivate was released. It’s funny because I thought that Bomer sounded like Bon Scott here, and then they do an AC/DC cover at 24:00. Cool. This might be from the World Beat Center in San Diego. I lived in L.A. around the same time and that graffiti artwork backdrop looks familiar. I am running with that assumption unless someone tells me I am wrong. PS: Look at Chris Rest’s glorious curly long hair on this one. Barry’s too, but I don’t think I have seen Chris’ hair like this before.

Happy Monday everyone. Alright, I really need to get on some of these tape collections that I have been neglecting. I plan to post stuff from everyone’s collections (including my own) on a rotating basis. Tour Manager Doug Tuesday will continue until we run out of his tapes. Here is an absolutely amazing one from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection. About a year ago, Wayne was kind enough to not only introduce me to Tour Manager Doug, but also gave his OK to put his tapes on the back burner while I worked through Doug’s. This is the first post from Wayne’s collection in over a year, and it is worth the wait. Some members of the east bay punk scene got together and recorded this demo- these songs are not Abba songs done “Stikky style”, they are done totally straight up. They could have made a fortune as a tribute band, haha.

Here’s another one from Dal Basi’s cassette collection. I already gushed about the band (and members’ follow-on bands) last Thursday, so I’ll paste that here in case you missed it: Moist was the band who preceded The Skirts- 3 members of Moist went on to be Skirts: Wendy Powell, Karen Simmons, and Sunita Bharwaj were Skirts, while Tony Muth and Eric Torres went off to do other cool things. The last song on this demo is an instrumental version of a song that became “Blue” on The Skirts’ “Look Up” debut CD. Awesome! There has been some buzz about Moist playing a show sometime, but I can’t get details. I hope the rumors are true, I would love to see them! I was in L.A. when they were active in the early to mid 90s so I have never seen them. If you like this, there is more stuff on the archive- just search up Moist and it should pop up for you. This tape could be 4 of the songs from the same recording session in a different sequence. I listened to them and they sound pretty much the same to me.

Gigantic thanks to Dal Basi for giving the OK to post this one. If anyone has been paying attention to the sac music archive, you’ll know that The Skirts are one of my all time favorite Sacramento bands. Happy Monday everyone! Here’s is an unusual one. Eggplant’s first box of tapes had a recycled tape with “Spoken Word at Gilman St” written over the existing labels in sharpie. It turns out that this is not a spoken word show at Gilman, but rather a bunch of kids outside the club relaying random personal anecdotes. It’s a pretty cool time capsule.

Another one from Mike Parisi’s bag of old VHS tapes. This tape was pretty messed up- I tried to transfer it 3 times and realized that the tape is unplayable for about 30 seconds, and no amount of re-do’s is going to fix it. Defamator were a thrash band who I never really followed, and they ripped. Wow, wish I knew back then. I think the band is John Romans on guitar, Jerry Montano on bass, and Parisi on drums. Soundboard audio at cattle and the mix ain’t bad. Wow.
