So I have been playing around with this enhancement software and I think I finally have the combo that I will use from now on. Here is the legendary Neurosis show where Scott’s son (then a baby) comes onstage and someone almost stomps him while stagediving. The set is incomplete because I ran out of tape. This one is in 1080 HD.

TLDR Version: Forward to 19:00 for best quality and sound.
There are a few really special shows that have both soundboard tapes, plus my master video that I had always wanted to synch together, but either the board mix was not good, video not good, or it was too difficult to synch. Now that we progressed to the point where we can fix the audio & video issues with software, I was almost ready. Then my friend Kingbean messaged me and offered to help with the painful analog audio-to-video synchs. Awesome!
For this one, the board mix was a bit all over the place. At first, the guitar overpowers the mix, then guitar drops in the mix throughout the show. As a result, I had to chop the board tape into thirds and remix each in izotope separately. I think it turned out pretty good.

R.I.P. Chi Pig. This was the only time I got to see SNFU, during one of the best Gilman weekends ever. Dag Nasty on Friday night, SNFU on Saturday plus opening bands like Neurosis. I was super excited to see this show, I loved those first 3 albums. The first 15min or so is not too good, as I was on a chair in the crowd and the pit was getting dangerously close. I hopped up on stage and the video is really nice from then on out. The audio is total garbage. I have a nice soundboard tape that we will synch someday. It will need to be a manual synch, pluraleyes ain’t having it.

OK, now that the Gilman clif bar stream is done, it’s time to post some full sets that we were working on. This one was something. No one had decent audio of this show (we thought no soundboard existed), so I did my best to remix the audio from my old camera, with the stock mic, from the stage. I ws able to improve it from shitty, to slightly less than shitty. Then, after the submission deadline for the videos passed, Eric Mcintire told me that he had a board tape. We had a quick, contactless exchange at Ikeda’s in Davis on Tuesday and then the work started. I got the tape digitized and remixed (the mix is all over the place, but better than the audio from the camera), then when I tried to synch it with plural eyes, it would not read the 2 audio sources as something that could be synched… because of the shitty stage audio. UGH. So our good friend Daniel Hague (Kill that cat, east bay punk doc) stepped in and stayed up until 2AM one night getting this synched. It’s not a perfect synch- synching 2 analog sources is near impossible- but he did one hell of a job. Thank you sir.
Creating this video took about 1000x longer than it took to read this explanation.

Here’s another one from Gary Shurtleff’s box of cassettes. I was also there videotaping the show. Maybe someone more talented than I am could synch the 2 sources together!
It takes about 15min for the mix to get dialed in. The guitar is WAY too loud in the mix for a bit (which is a big pet peeve of mine), then it finally settles down into a decent board mix.

Man, I can’t believe this was 30 years ago. Dag Nasty was my favorite band at the time and I was pretty excited that I got permission to film. This set is very heavy on Field Day material. I brightened and increased exposure, and it is way better than before. It still sounds like hell, since I did not have the nice mic yet.
Here’s a 30+ year old tape from the collection. I think I got this shortly after the show happened, in a trade with John Scharpen. Insane setlist, this is Mr. Bungle at their peak for me.

Collections post from Craig Hilmer’s collection today. It’s a decent audience recording of The Pogues when they hit Liberty Lunch on their “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” tour… so kinda at their peak. At least it’s MY favorite album of theirs. There is a ton more from Craig’s collection like this. I get all excited every time I dig in there!

Even though this is off a 1st gen VHS tape from the band’s archives, the quality is not great. Very shaky camerawork and the video is pretty dark. Good enough for an On This Date in History post. It could use a full deshake and brightening/denoise. Maybe some day.
Speaking of AOD, it looks like they are finally going to get over to England to play some shows in a couple months. I had grand plans to see them a bunch of times over there in 2020, but we all know what happened in 2020. The “legion of boom” fest at Boom Leeds never refunded my money despite multiple emails. Gotta love punk rock. On the other hand, Rebellion fest were more than accommodating- they were really great dealing with the cancellation. I hope to get over there someday.
