Sweet Baby Jesus- 924 Gilman, Berkeley ca 9/19/87 xfer f/ master soundboard cassette Lookout Records

It’s time for the Patreon Voter’s choice post of the week! Well, I need to apologize. I grabbed 5 random shows from Radley’s folder of goods and did not realize that this one was only 2 minutes long. LOL. I will also post one of the longer ones that tied for 2nd place, hence 4 posts today:

Thin White Rope- ARENA DEL CHIONSO, REGGIOMILIA ITALY 9/13/87 xfer f/ 2nd gen soundboard tape Davis

Here’s one for today’s On This Date in History that sounded ok, but I figured I could make it sound GREAT in Izotope. Hm.. Not really. The original mix of this has guitar buried in the mix, so I tried to boost in Izotope. That did bring the guitar up a bit, but it also brought up the bass which is already too loud in the mix. After I did that, I realized that Joe was too low in the mix from about 30min-on. In the end, I am not sure if this is any better than the raw board tape. Oh well. I tried.

Front Line- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento 9/2/87 xfer from master cassette Joe Sib San Jose Punk Band

Here’s a relatively unknown band, but they played a ton of Clear and Distinct shows in the late 80s. Front Line was from San Jose and had Joe Sib on Vocals, prior to his bands 22 Jacks and Wax, and also prior to his co-founding of Side One Dummy. Adam Segal from The Faction was also close to the band, releasing their 1st EP on his IM records label and co-writing a song on the EP.
This is only 1 of 2 master recordings that survived the 80s from my collection. This one from anonymous, and one other that I did on the boom box in October of 87.

Attitude- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca 9/2/87 xfer from master cassette tape Attitude Adjustment

I am running late today- I almost didn’t have time to put one up. Here is another Anonymous master tape that he did with the little handled Aiwa recorder. That deck/mic combo had no low end at all, but they are pretty crisp and they EQ well. It’s listenable.
I remember hanging out with Andy and the band before a show, but I can’t remember if it was this one. I know that I didn’t stay for the actual concert. Great lineup- C.O.C., D.I., Attitude as a late sub for Reagan Youth.

DI- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento Ca. 9/2/87 xfer from master/1st gen Audio Tape D.I. Punk Live

This is an odd one in 2 ways. Even though D.I. opened for C.O.C., this is tacked onto the end of the tape AFTER COC… which means that “Anonymous” might have copied his master to the COC tape, making this a 1st gen. hmmm…
Also, D.I. is in the rarest of forms here. When they played El Dorado Saloon back in January of 1987, the crowd LOVED them and they played an amazing set. Here we are 8 months later and they get into shouting matches with the crowd. Odd. Casey is usually funny and affable as a frontman… must have been an off night.

Corrosion of Conformity- El Dorado Saloon, Sacramento 9/2/87 xfer from master audio tape

Here is the last local COC show of note, that I have. I think that Anonymous taped this one, but it is hard to tell. It might have been Mark Martin’s friend Ricky. This one had no low end at all, so I EQ’d it to boost bass as much as possible and dropping the highs/midrange.

Russ Gibb- Interviews with Punks and Skinheads, Toronto Canada 9/87 xfer f/master tape

Collections post time! This is from one of the many Russ Gibb tapes that I was able to snag off Ebay. The tape just said “Toronto 9/87” – that was how a lot of the Russ auctions went- you had a vague description on the tape and you kinda rolled the dice when you bid on it.

This one turned out to have a bunch of interviews with punks and skins, along with an apparent mentally ill guy at the very end.

Video

Pianosaurus- The Pier, Raleigh NC 9/1/87 xfer from 2nd gen audio cassette Complete Show

For today’s On This Date in History, here is a “What the Heck was I Thinking” moment from tape trading in the 80s. Like I had said before, Anonymous and I have been taping/trading shows since the 80s. He seemed to be trading with all of the cool early SST/indie tapers who had good equipment and I was more focused on video.

I was over at Anonymous’ place sometime in the late 80s, looking at Todd Goss’ tape list and I see this show listed. I loved that Pianosaurus album so I bugged the hell out of him to get this. Let’s just say that the concept of playing on toy instruments does not translate well into a live setting… sorry man. Fast forward to today and I learn that Pianosaurus were opening for one of the greatest bands ever, Guadalcanal Diary at this show. Should have grabbed that one instead.
