I think it is OK to share this story now- 35 years is probably long enough to avoid any hassles. Apparently, Dag Nasty was aware of the volume of soundboard tapes coming out of Gilman in the early days so they told the venue there was to be NO TAPING their show that night. A few days after the show, Wayne Vanderkuil gets this 1st gen soundboard tape in the mail from a well-known audio engineer there. Someone must have not heard the directive- maybe they were in the restroom or something.
Anyway, I had a 2nd or 3rd gen copy of this for a long time. Since I was able to get a clean transfer off this tape, I was able to rebalance this one pretty effectively. The one issue is that the bass in the recording is so shallow sounding, Izotope won’t recognize it as bass! I was able to boost the guitar and drums at least. The bass still overwhelms the mix later in the set.
Recorded by: a well-known audio engineer at 924 Gilman
Transfer by: Shayne Stacy
Equipment used: Nakamichi Dragon and M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card
Rebalance in Izotope Rx8 (Drums +6, Guitar +10)
and I just realized that I forgot to normalize the audio after Izotope so levels are a little low. Turn it up!
