Metallica- Master of Puppets Instrumental Rehearsals 1985 xfer from unknown gen audio cassette

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday!
This one has been in draft mode on the youtube channel for 5 months. Since it was hissy and a little sped up, I wasn’t sure if it was worth posting. I also did a quick check Shazam back then and Disposable Heroes came up as already being on the Master of Puppets box set, so I assumed this was already released. I came back to it this morning and performed a deeper check on it, and the rest do not seem to be released. There is so much Metallica out there, it was hard to know if this was unique. So I figured what the hell, let’s post it and the hardcore fans/collectors will tell me if it is anything special.
I have one more Tour Manager Doug tape for next week, and that’s it.. unless he gives me more tapes.

Attitude Adjustment- Rehearsal 1985 xfer from unknown gen audio cassette hardcore

What a chaotic day- here’s a short one for you. This was on the same tape as the Suicidal that I posted yesterday and it sounds different than the other 4 track rehearsal tape I posted a while back, and it is shorter. Hopefully Eric McIntire will have more context about the session.

Sacrilege B.C.- Rehearsal 1985 East Bay Thrash Metal

You would not believe how bad this one sounded before EQ- it was muffled and not a fun listen. Now it is not quite as muffled and it kinda kicks ass.
In my last Sacrilege post, I pondered why they didn’t get as big as their peers at the time, like Forbidden, Possesed, etc. Sean from the band mentioned something that I never considered, because my brain isn’t wired that way. There was a “tight jean and high top shoes” fashion that was pretty popular in the scene in the 80s. Maybe that was it. Who knows, the songs were definitely there.

Skate Nix- Demo 1980s Sacramento Punk from audio cassette Magnolia Thunderfinger Identity Crysis

This band came up in facebook comment back-and-forth with a few people, and I had the demo on a 35 year old tape here. Big thanks to Joseph Vito Lessa for giving detailed background on the band:
“Skate Nix had T bone from Magnolia Thunderfinger, Chris Schenk and their drummer was named Mark? Re-formed in 1985 with me drumming, Schenk on bass, Craig Harmeier on guitar. Soon we got Matt Orick on vocals. Then came Rick Wagstaff on guitar and Shane Kopasek on vocals. This became Identity Crysis. Then Came Bill Heston on guitar. Soon after came Stan Hanas and Troy Tausch.”
I don’t remember where I got this tape- it had to be someone local since it had that Team Urinals on there along with a Final Conflict audience tape from Gilman.. it’s got some hiss so it’s not anything close to the master tape.

Pap Smear- First Instrumental Demo xfer from 1st/2nd gen Tape Jeff Hanneman Slayer Papsmear

Happy Tuesday Everyone. This one will probably be a total TL;DR.

These posts are for Bobby Khan- thanks for the Slayer book! It was pretty damned good.

Pap Smear was a side project featuring Jeff Hanneman & Dave Lombardo (Slayer), and Rocky George from Suicidal Tendencies. My friend & Roseville High School Alum Matt Polish (IGD) also handled vocal duties on one demo. I believe I have the best copies of these tapes, as I got them from Matt.

Here’s the backstory of Matt’s involvement (and how I got the tapes). Matt befriended Slayer in August of 1984- he approached Tom Araya at the Aquatic Park show in Berkeley with beer and became fast friends with the band. He toured with them on the Summer Fashions Tour in 1985. At about this time, Jeff Hanneman would invite Matt to L.A. where they would get hammered and do music or other stupid stuff. One time, they went to Toys R Us to buy the most stupid thing they could think of. Matt won the competition by buying a kiddie pool.

So every few months, Matt would call me (he lived in Rocklin) and tell me to come over. He would play me tapes that he got from Jeff from his trips to L.A.. Some of them were classic punk tapes (Wasted Youth, Black Flag etc) and some were Pap Smear demos. I would copy everything and keep them stored away. Matt’s original (1st gen) copies from Jeff are gone, so this 2nd gen is probably the lowest tape available.

Here is the first tape that Matt brought back. In fact, this one may be the actual tape that Matt brought back—I never bought realistic tapes. So, this one may be a 1st gen from Jeff’s tape, or it may be a 2nd gen.

Dot 3- Demo 1980s xfer from master cassette tape Bay Area band

Here’s another demo from Eddie’s collection. Dot 3 played a bunch of shows in the late 80s with bands like Vomit Launch, The Idiot, and Camper Van Beethoven. This demo is not on discogs, nor has it been posted to YT. Fun fact: Chris Mondt, Trombone and percussion on this demo, also played on the multi-platinum album by En Vogue, Funky Divas

Metal Hexx- Helvetia Park, Sacramento Ca. 1985 xfer from master VHS VIDEO tape!

Oh man, stuff like this totally validates all of the work that we do on the sacramentomusicarchive.com website.

MASSIVE HUGE BIG thanks to Paul Wells for emailing the SMA website and letting me know that he had this footage. I went to a different Helvetia Park concert in 1985 (Sentinel Beast/Redrum/Heathen etc) and it was life changing. I realized that there was a metal scene outside of the “bigger” shows at Cal Expo Amp, Memorial Aud, and even The Crest. Finding video from one of these shows has me giddy with excitement! THANK YOU Paul.

Panther- Master Demo c 1985 Audio Only Transfer from apparent master tape

I realize that this site leans heavily toward punk, alternative/indie, and thrash/speed/death metal… and we are lacking material from the other end of the Metal spectrum. Here’s one for all of the hair metal fans out there- a well-produced demo from the great local band Panther. I never really gave them a chance since I was already in thrash/punk land when this was released, but it’s really good!

This is a direct xfer from the tape pictured. Any song fragments are that way on the tape.

As an aside… yes. I really put a tape that dirty into the nak dragon. (shudder). And I wonder why I need to send it in for repair once a year.

Thin White Rope- Exploring the Axis Rough Mixes Audio only, from DAT xfer of low gen audiotape 1985

So here is a really special one today. Even though I have had this tape for a very long time, I want to give a special thanks to Roger for being OK with this post. If anyone has a problem with it (looking at you, my friend Lisa Fancher) please let me know and I’ll pull it. I figured that since this has been “unsurfaced” for 30+ years, we are OK to put this out there.
