The Muffs- TT the Bears Place, Boston Ma 6/1/95 xfer from unknown gen audio cassette

Collections post time- this one from Scott Hamilton, who sent over a small box of (mainly) Muffs stuff. Thanks Scott!

Kim passed away today, 6 years ago today. I remember the shock of seeing the post and not being able to concentrate on work. I still can’t bring myself to listen to that last album. I need to do it soon.

The quality on this one was pretty poor. It was all high end, but not much distortion so I was able to fix it up and make it listenable through Soundforge EQ and Izotope rebal. Thank goodness for software!

The tape was labeled as Middle East Cafe 5/25/95, but I have a hard time believing that they would play 2 shows right next to each other, a week apart.

Audio Live Concert

Muffs- WDRE “Underground Lounge” Live in Studio, Philadelphia 5/23/95 xfer from Pre-FM DAT Mix Maste

Sometimes when a tape is labeled “pre-FM soundboard”, it is just the live performance as it was broadcast, but taped through the system in studio. Not this one. You get to hear all of the chatter between DJ’s and the band, along with only some of the commercials and some silence (which I assume is a spot for local stations to stick a commercial in). A really fun listen if you are a Muffs fan.
but, BE PREPARED FOR BIG GAPS OF SILENCE.
Another Ebay troll/score btw.

Audio Live Performance

The Muffs- The Palace, Hollywood Ca 5/5/95 xfer from unknown gen cassette Punk Kim Shattuck

I thought I was done with Scott Hamilton’s collection, but I was trying to clean the studio (an impossible task) and found 1 more tape. This one sounds really good for The Palace- that place was an acoustic nightmare. It must be a pro walkman recording- no distortion with high and low end! Cool.

The Muffs- Tower Records, Woodland Hills Ca 5/4/95 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Kim Shattuck Live in-store

For those of you following along, I do one “on this date” post and one collections post- which is an audio/video from my or someone’s collection I am curating. Yesterday, there was no collections post for the first time in over a year. Why? I was invited to go up to Portland and video 2 Grandaddy shows at Revolution Hall (Thanks Shawn). Between the crappy hotel wifi and me being so busy, I was only able to get an On This Date post out, after midnight. So, consider this yesterday’s collections post from Scott Hamilton’s collection. Thanks for sending these tapes my way, Scott!
This one was pretty difficult to work up. The band was playing in front of sunlit windows, so every time the camera moved the light exposure changed dramatically. I did my best with it- I pushed the brightness/exposure/contrast as much as I could so you can at least see shadowed Kim at its darkest, without it looking stupidly overexposed when the camera would correct itself.

Man, it’s fun finding stuff like this after so long.

Live Concert Video

The Muffs- Dragonfly, Los Angeles Ca. 2/7/95 xfer from 8mm master tape pt 1

I lived in the L.A. area from 1992-1995. I had 2 good friends when I lived there- Todd Nakamine was one of them. We met at a Penelope Houston show at Bogart’s shortly after I loved there in 1992 or 93. We both filmed shows. In 1995, Todd’s camcorder died, so he would drive out from Redondo Beach (I think), pick up the TR-81, then go back and tape a show. He did this a few times- once for this show, once for a fem2fem in-store performance. That’s an hour round trip, that was dedication! Anyway, Todd was always trying to get me to see this band called The Muffs. I never did, and then years later they become one of my all-time favories. Glad I have the tape now. The audio is extremely distorted- sorry about that. They must have been loud.

Live Concert Video

The Muffs- KXLU live in studio, Los Angeles 9/17/93 xfer from unknown gen audio tape

I made a new facebook friend today- his name is Ronnie Barnett. You may know him from The Muffs. Looking forward to hearing more about the boom boom room, Kiss magnets and Phyliis Diller’s record collection Ronnie! I just happened to be transferring this tape as part of Todd Pritchard’s requests from Jason Ross’ collection, so today seems like a good day to post it.
This is awesome- Kim only drops the F-bomb once or twice on the air. The tape had a ton of reception static, so I ran 2 passes of denoise in Izotope rx7. There is still static, but it is WAY better than before.

Audio Live Performance

The Muffs- Emo’s, Austin Tx 5/22/93 xfer from ? gen audio cassette Kim Shattuck punk

This one did not sound good at all when I digitized it. In fact, I could not make out the songs due to all of the distortion. Once I found a song I could understand, I did my best to EQ it in Sony Suondforge, then rebalance it in izotope. It still sucks, but you can at least make out what’s happening.

Since I had to push the rebalance on the vocals to hear them at all, you will get super loud crowd between songs. It’s a wonderful feature- Izotope doesn’t differentiate between the vocal you want (Kim) vs. what you don’t want (crowd).

From Scott Hamilton’s collection. Not bagging on Scott btw, his tapes were much appreciated.

Audio Live Concert

The Muffs- The Palomino, North Hollywood Ca 6/1/91 xfer f/unknown gen VHS tape multicam Kim Shattuck

Here’s more from my VHS collection. This one was on the same tape as that Club Lingerie tape. I guess I mis-labeled that Lingerie tape as a multicam and someone got super excited about the error in YT comments. Video Bob usually did multicam shoots from Lingerie, I am surprised that it wasn’t.
This one is definitely a 2 camera deal- I checked. I lifted the date from an old Youtube post that had 1 song from this in lesser quality. This one isn’t perfect quality, but still good enough to enjoy.

From a community cable show called Lady Rockers Live. Thanks to the crew that put this together in 1991, it’s really awesome.
