Nirvana- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca 6/17/91 xfer from Master Audiotape

So I tried to video the show and I was told NO. I tried to track down John from Gold Mountain, and he appeared to be avoiding me. So, I snuck up into the upper seats of the Crest to set up my mics to at least get an audio recording. Glad I did- sounds pretty damned good.

Kai Kln- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca. 2/12/91 Direct xfer from 8mm Master!

Hi, this one is for Marc Malakie- we ran into each other at Old Ironsides last night and we chatted about the old days. He was the biggest fan of Kai Kln’s early stuff! Please tag the band since I am not fb friends with them. A funny side note about this show- they were opening for Blue Oyster Cult and since it was in the bootlegging glory days of the early 90s, they FREAKED OUT about my camera. I was trying to explain to them that I did not even want to video their band, but they wanted the camera out of there. So, it was a quick 30min and bail after Kai Kln’s set.

Mojo Nixon & the Toadliquors- Crest Theater, Sacramento 10/12/90 xfer from 8mm master video Enhanced

I think we all got the shocking news that Mojo Nixon passed away on the Outlaw Country Cruise yesterday. I don’t have any personal anecdotes to add- I met him twice to ask permission to video, and he was very kind. Condolences to his family and friends- it sounds like he was on the cruise with his wife and family.
I had already mentioned in past posts/comments that the Mojo and Skid show from cattle club was the drunkest I had ever been videotaping a show- what a party! It seemed like the party always followed Mojo’s personality. You can find Jim McLain’s 2 camera edit of that show- my & Jerry Perry’s camera angles and possibly anonymous’ audio- on the archive. I will post that link to FB as well, or you can easily search it out.
This was the last time I saw Mojo- shortly after Mojo and Skid had parted ways, he recorded 1 solo album and then formed to Toadliquors and started touring as a full band. Excellent, high energy show. It drew a pretty decent crowd as well. I am a bit bummed about the audio- that sony mic that I velcro’d to the top usually sounded better than this.

Sonic Youth- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca. 8/20/90 xfer from 8mm master enhanced

This one has a story. Back in 1990, I was the manager of the office softball team. We only had 9 players on the same day that Sonic Youth was playing the Crest. So I drove downtown, showed up early to the show, set up the camera and had a friend turn it on. Then I drove back to Citrus Heights and played the game, then sped back downtown to the show. The camera does not move for the first half, until I get there. I also missed filming the opener- Nirvana. D’oh. At least I filmed them at Cattle…

Robyn Hitchcock- New George’s, San Rafael Ca. 7/7/90 xfer from 8mm master

So the day after the show at the Crest Theater, I drove over to San Rafael to see Robyn in a much smaller venue. New George’s was packed to the gills, so I was not able to get a great place to film. I sat on a chair side stage and did a handheld job. I have a 1st gen VHS copy of another stationary angle taken straight on that would edit nicely with this one, if anyone wants to give it a try.

Herbivore- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca. 7/6/90 Part 1

Herbie Kritzer was in Sacramento band Wood is Good before performing as a one man band (including chapman stick- talk about multitasking!) called Herbiovre. He has played for Charlie Peacock and was a Sacramento fixture for years. Anyway, this must be one of the only recordings of Herbivore. Enjoy! For Lee Osh and his appreciation of Wood is Good.

Robyn Hitchcock- Crest Theater, Sacramento Ca. 7/6/90

This was such an exciting show. Robyn was one of the biggest artists at the time to give me the OK to video. It turned out to be a great show, and the video turned out great as well. Robyn even name checks Dennis Yudt toward the end when someone is pounding on the side door at the Crest. Fun fact- Robyn’s rider required that he have a tuned piano on stage with him, something that Brian and Jerry had to make happen at no small expense… and then he never used it. Enjoy!
