LUV- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento 5/10/24 4K UHD Master Video full complete set rock metal punk band

I made a mistake in yesterday’s post- the correct name of the band is Bloodlake. There is no info that I can find about the band, so let me know if you have ever heard of them. They were a bay area thrash metal band from the 1980’s.
On to today’s- I had never heard of the band LUV before, so I asked Chris Lemos if they were any good. He gave me this detailed, glowing recommendation and told me which bands the members had been in before so I made sure to video the set. I can’t remember a thing that he told me about the members, so let me know if you know.
Having a name like LUV makes it really hard to find them in internet searches.

Whoreified- Phono Select, Sacramento Ca. 3/24/24 4K UHD w/Rode Videomic Pro Audio

Getting this one out early today to give you time to check them out… and to make plans to see Whoreified (great name btw), along with The Pist, DOVE, Holehog, and Aruspex at tge Cafe Colonial tonight. I love it when bills have a mix of younger and older bands- it brings a lot of people together who wouldn’t usually hang out.
The band opened up the Phono Select Deathryders show last month and played a short 15 minute set. Very riot grrl sounding.

Class of 77- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 2/8/24 4K UHD w/ Schoeps CCM4 audio

Since I have actually been out video recording some shows recently, I’ll post some of the opening sets from local and regional bands who played over the past couple weeks.
First up is Class of ’77. The band has members of other well-known bands from the 80s and 90s, including Carmela Thompson (Short Dogs Grow and many others), Chelsea Rose (White Trash Debutantes, Bite). The band had a sun/interesting concept- they play old punk covers along with a couple of their original songs.
Unfortunately, I missed about the first 5 minutes of the set. I grabbed a random GH5S and it happened to be one I had not used before and the settings were all jacked up. It does sound nice- the schoeps did a nice job on this set.

M.D.C.- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento 2/8/24 4K UHD Multicam with Rode Video Pro Stereo Millions of Dead

Late post today. Man, am I tired. Very physically demanding day.
MDC came to town a few weeks back on a stacked bill. If you have not seen them lately, they are worth seeing. The new songs are great, Dave sounds much better now that he can hear (in ear monitor) and the band is tight.
The lighting in the cafe gave one of my lenses fits- it kept losing focus due to the lighting, so apologies for that. Just try to imagine that it is a special effect. Related to that, I am looking for a good micro 4/3 f2.8 panasonic lens, if you know of any deals.
I could not get the multitrack set up in time, I could not get there early enough. You get rode audio, as it was better than the Schoeps.

Tim Williamson- Phace/Addams Wedding, Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 10/9/23 1080p HD Master Enhanced

A couple months back, I was honored to be asked to video the wedding between Lis Phace and Tree Adams at the Cafe Colonial. After the wedding, they hosted a nice show there with Tim Williamson, Tree and others. I had a conflict for the show, but I still wanted to video the show for them… so I took my original Canon HFM30 camcorder (the one I shot Riot Fest in 2013, Orion fest in 2012 and a bunch of other stuff) and mounted to the bracket above the entrance to the club. It didn’t turn out too bad- audio is nice and I was able to fix up the video quality.
I wanted to be sure to post this today, since Tim Williamson is playing a set tonight at the Cafe. He’s really great (watch/listen) and you should head on over there. I think Tree (the groom on this day) is opening the show tonight.

Here is another set from the Phace/Addams wedding, filmed with the old HFM30 on the over-door bracket. Came out remarkably well- I was not expecting it to sound this good! I think that is the groom (Tree) on the bass on the left there.

Mohama Saz- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 8/18/23 4K UHD Multicam w/ Schoeps Audio Spanish Psych

Here’s something a little different to break up the endless stream of old metal and gilman soundboard posts- a psych band that Anonymous & I taped at the Cafe last year.
Our good friend Ted Mattes (you have probably heard one of his recordings- legendary) asked either Me or Anonymous to cover this show at the cafe last year and we both ended up going. I did a 4 camera shot and Anonymous used his Schoeps MK4s and it turned out pretty nice.
Never heard of the band? I hadn’t either. Here is what Discogs has to say: “Spanish psychedelic rock group with heavy influences of mediterranean and Middle East music, active since summer 2014, founded by AdriĂ¡n Ceballos and Javier Alonso.”

Mother Muerte- Café Colonial, Sacramento Ca 8/18/23 Partial Set Schoeps Mics

Here’s something a bit different than the steady diet of early punk/metal (Wayne) and KALX in studio stuff(Rick) that I have been posting on weekdays for months. I actually attended a show last weekend for the first time in almost 2 months- Mohama Saz(Spain), Mother Muerte (Sac), and Los Sindes(Sac). It was nice to see the locals open the show. I missed part of this set because I was dicking around with my laptop, trying to get the multitrack setup ready and it just didn’t work out. Multitrack next time.
Mother Muerte was a 2 piece band with guitar/vocals and a drummer- I think I missed about 10min of the show.

Los Sindes- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 8/18/23 Schoeps Audio Master

Here’s another one from last Friday’s show at the Cafe. I was not prepared for this band- they were so good, and they sound like no one else in Sacramento- alternative/jangly new wavish type stuff with some of that early cult/killing joke guitar chorus at times. I like it!
Sorry about the fluctuations in quality. I was getting video cameras prepped so I had to duck down to get stuff out of my bag. I now know that the soundboard enclosure makes a ton of vibration noise.
I would definitely go see this band again.

Love Gang- Cafe Colonial, Sacramento Ca 3/24/23 4K UHD Multicam with Multitrack Audio Denver

Here, finally, is one of the most anticipated shows of 2023 for me. I first saw Love Gang by total chance- I was at SXSW in 2018 without a badge and I had a day before my flight out, so I headed to Spider House(FREE and no badge required!) to see Lee Bains III. The venue had like 5 stages with bands playing constantly. I see Keith Morris leaving a room at the venue, so I stroll in there to see what’s up… and HOLY NWOBHM shit there was this band destroying the place. They had a keyboard player but were still super heavy.. and one of the guys was wearing a Witchfinder General shirt! I caught the last song or two and then spent the next 5 years buying their records and bugging the hell out of Chris Lemos to bring them to town.
The show was great, they played a a few off the new album, Mean Streak. The lighting was a challenge- it was only red lights and it was very dark on stage. Don’t let the thumbnail pic fool you- that was a photo flash- it’s DARK… but it sounds pretty damned great, thanks to Pat Hills’ multitrack mix. Thanks Pat!
