Slobberbone- Starry Plough, Berkeley Ca 11/5/00 xfer from DAT Master soundboard rebalanced

Here is one from the glory days of alt.country- when you could see bands like Slobberbone and Old 97s play every 3-6 months around here. I don’t know why I didn’t videotape this show- my camera might have been in the shop- but this DAT Soundboard sounds amazing. All I did to rebalance it was boost the snare a little bit, as it disappears from the mix for a while about midway through. I probably should have boosted the guitar a touch, but I like the full bassy sound.
If you are unfamiliar with the band, this is a good way to get acquainted. Awesome cover of Neil’s “Big Time” for the encore.
PS: I did video the show 3 months after this, plus DAT soundboard and schoeps audience. It’s on the (endless) to do list.

Slobberbone- Capitol Garage, Sacramento Ca 10/4/00 xfer from DAT Master Coresound Mics

About 22 years ago, I blind emailed Slobberbone’s tour booking agency, Hello! Booking, with hopes of bringing Slobberbone to Sacramento. I hooked Hello up with Charles Twilling from Cap Garage and they made it happen- thanks to both of them for bringing one of my favorite bands to town.
I introduced myself to the band and asked if they would play one of my favorite songs, 16 Days. They were clearly not on board with the idea, but they did it for me. Thanks!
I had thought that my recording sounded lousy at the time, but it doesn’t sound too bad given the circumstances. It’s a mystery as to why I didn’t use my Roland MX5 mixer through the board. I must have had an issue with cables or instruments weren’t mic’d. I can’t remember.
Charles brought Slobberbone back to Sac 2 more times. Forever appreciative for that.

Slobberbone- Beverungen, Germany 6/11/00 DAT to CDR to you. R.I.P. Jan De Bever

Before the internet and youtube changed everything, people who taped shows would network together and mail tapes and CDRs of live concerts to each other. In the mid 90s, I was trading with about 50 people. It was crazy. I went from 1200 cassettes in 1988, to 4,000 cassettes in 1995 and then moved to DAT, CDR and DVD trading.
When you would send something off, you would typically write a letter with tape details, tape requests in return, and any personal stuff that’s happening. You would become friends with people that you traded with over time. I can’t remember how I started trading with Jan- it was in the late 90s or early 2000 and we bonded over love of the alt country band Slobberbone. He was based in Holland, and he (along with his friend Michiel) would follow the band around to multiple countries to tape the band. He taped at least 9 Slobberbone shows in June of 2000 alone!
We just learned that Jan de Bever passed last summer. Thanks to Jan the Lazyman for letting me know. Pretty bummed out about this.

Slobberbone- Vera, Gronigen Holland 6/7/00 xfer from DAT-CDR clone complete show alt.country

Hiya- did you miss me? I woke up with severe back pain and a whopper of a headache that was moving into migraine territory. I stumbled to the PC and offed my Napalm Death/Melvins ticket for tonight and laid on the couch. Now I am feeling a lot better and kind of regretting the ticket sale.

Here is one of at least 9 shows that Jan de Bever taped in the summer of 2000- he was a huge SB fan and documented just about every show in his area. He passed away a while back- R.I.P. Jan.

I had the quality on this one rated lower than his usual recordings, so I checked it out. The quality of his recording was great- the problem was that the mix in the room was a bit off. Vocals were buried and guitar was a bit low in the mix. Izotope fixed all of that up.

Slobberbone- SXSW, Club Deville, Austin Tx. 3/16/00 xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Clone

I got this from the person who taped it, but once again I can’t remember who that was. It might have been Marcus Winfree, Maybe Mike Shiner, or any of my friends who would bring their DAT to sxsw every year.
I was about 15 minutes into this one and it sounded like a standard set so I stopped the DAT transfer, but about 20min in it gets really good. Scott Danbom gets up there and plays violin on some songs. Say Zuzu appearance as well.

Slobberbone- Dan’s Silverleaf, Denton Tx 3/27/99 Set 1 Minidisc Soundboard Master xfer f/ DAT Clone

Aw crap, I forgot to trim the beginning. Fwd to 1:30 for the start of the show.
Here’s another Slobberbone audio only gem. This starts as an acoustic set with Scott Danbom on violin and then moves into the rock. Pretty good mix that I was able to help a bit in Izotope.
The 2nd set has not one, but TWO Uncle Tupelo covers.
RIP Jess. Banjo sounds great on this one.

Recorded by: I don’t know. If anyone knows who taped TX shows with the minidisc in the late 90s, let me know.

Forgot to trim again- forward to 1 minute in.
The shower of Slobberbone/Drams posts for Jess continues. 90 minute set with a lot of cool covers, including 2 uncle tupelo songs and the Merle Travis cover “Dark as a Dungeon”. Imagine seeing an hour-long set, and then seeing this one! That’s a lotta Slobberbone.
We think that this show was taped by George “Lowdog” Savage, I’ll email him and let him know we uploaded this.

Slobberbone- Boomerang, San Francisco 1/21/98 DAT Audience Clone Americana Brent Best alt.country

For today’s “On This Day in History” post, I picked one of my all time favorite bands, playing near me before I knew who they were. I still remember the exact time and place I heard them- I was driving a car full of teenagers to a punk show in Modesto in august of 1998 and I popped this DAT of one of their live shows into my car DAT deck (yes, I really had a car DAT deck. Do not recommend). I had to shush the kids because I wanted to focus on what I was hearing. Thanks to Mike Shiner for that board tape all those years back- Brent Best can blame him for my fandom. Haha.
I have no idea who taped this one. I have some ideas- it might have been Ted or Kurt Vogel. Not sure. This is from a DAT clone of the show. Sounds like quality mics as well. I think the youtube photo is from the Boomerang. I don’t see a stage so I am not sure.

Slobberbone- Border’s Books, Dallas Tx 4/6/96 xfer from DAT Audience clone Acoustic In-store

Here’s a fun one for On This Date in History. Let’s keep the “Alt Country bands playing at retail establishments” theme going. First The Bottle Rockets at Best Buy, now Slobberbone at Border’s.
The recording was super dynamic, so I did another one of my janky volume boosts throughout different parts of the show. If you hear sudden volume drops, that’s my doing.
I got this from the taper, but I can’t recall who from Dallas was taping on DAT back then. Maybe lowdog (George Savage) or this guy named Riley who did a bunch of Old 97s stuff around this time.
