Asexuals- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 6/20/87 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette rebalanced

This one comes from original Gilman soundman Radley Hirsch- he gave a copy of this board tape to Anonymous back in the 80s. This one isn’t too bad for an early Gilman board tape- they only had an 8 channel soundboard for the first couple years and the mixes could be very uneven. Radley does a nice job keeping all of the instruments in the mix. The levels slide around a bit, so I could not do much with the guitar and bass. I did bump up the snare a touch. Thanks to Radley for the foresight to document all of this stuff.
Side note: This appears to be from after John Kastner’s departure from the band.

Soup- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 6/14/87 xfer from VHS Master tape Battle of the Bands Punk Very Small

I think this is the last show I have digitized from Chris Eng’s VHS tapes. Time to grab another handful and get to it. This last batch lasted months! So much more to get to.
Soup was part of that first wave of bands to come out of Gilman. Richie Bucher (artist of the original 924 gilman logo & Green Day Dookie album cover) and Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam and many others) were in the band.
They put out a demo and a couple of things on Very Small Records.

Operation Ivy- 924 Gilman,Berkeley Ca 6/14/87 xfer f/master VHS tape Enhanced Rancid Battle of Bands

It’s finally time for another one from Chris Eng’s collection of VHS tapes, and it’s a good one! This one cleaned up nicely- I hope I didn’t overdo the denoise. It’s a fine balance to remove the grain while keeping the detail without getting that “iphone beauty selfie” look.
This is the second to last band that I have on tap from this date. Once we find the best versions of the soundboard tapes, it will be time to digitze those and synch them up.

Isocracy- 924 Gilman Battle of the Bands, Berkeley Ca 6/14/87 xfer f/Master VHS Lookout Records Punk

The “on this day” post is not quite ready yet, so let’s do this one first today. Isocracy was one of the more well-known bands in Gilman’s early days. That might have been due to their wacky stage antics- the first time I saw them, they threw hundreds of pounds of shredded paper into the audience. It was chaos, For this Battle of the Bands set, it looks like they have a guy onstage with a stop sign repurposed into a “pogo” sign. Joel Wing sighting on side stage taking pictures.

Sewer Trout- Battle of the Bands, 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca. 6/14/87 xfer from master VHS tape

It’s hard to believe that it has been 4 weeks since one of Chris Eng’s videos has been posted. Even with this 2-a-day business, it still doesn’t seem to be fast enough. People were asking for this set so here ya go. It’s really cool to see fans singing along with the songs in the front. Sewer Trout had some serious fans. They were somewhat famously brought back into the public view during Billie Joe Armstrong’s RRHOF Speech.

THIS IS MY NEW Temporary FB account, while I try to get my hacked/disabled one back. You would think it would be easy- all FB has to do is look at the activity on the old one and see that it is the same type of activity as here, then determine who the impersonator really is…. but I have discovered that there are not many humans overseeing this. It’s a nightmare. Please add me as a friend if you’d like. Christopher Eng-Ster, please friend me so I can ask you questions about your tapes in the future, haha.
But seriously, this FB profile has been reported as the impersonator (at 4:15am today which is when the hacks always accur), so please friend me through other channels if you can:

Big thanks to Lee Osh(Craig) for getting word out and Jason Ellis for his help as well.

OK, on to the goods. Here is another one from Chris Eng’s collection of the Battle of the bands show at 924 Gilman. This one looks dark at first, but they finally turn the lights up and it looks good. On a side note, I found the soundboard tape that Wayne Vanderkuil got from Radley for some of these bands that day and I will synch them… soon. I need to find the other tape with the rest of the bands- I am sure it is in those boxes somewhere.

Sweet Baby Jesus- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 6/14/87 xfer from VHS Master Tape Enhanced Pop Punk

It’s Friday, so here is the first video for the weekend. Are you being good capitalists and shopping for Black Friday? I went to Goodwill.
Here is yet another set from Chris Eng’s tape of the Battle of the Bands show. It is taking weeks to get through each of Chris’ tapes since he filmed so many back to back, and there are hundreds of tapes to do. Years of stuff.
Sweet Baby Jesus was one of those bands who seem destined to big things, kind of like my comments on Tilt earlier this week. Definitely the most accessible out of the first wave of Gilman bands. I love ’em.

Busy Saturday today- 2 soccer games, Saxophone recording for all state band, and a team party… so I’ll make this quick. Here is another “Battle of the Bands” set from Chris Eng’s collection of master VHS tapes. As mentioned before, once I locate and confirm that the board tapes from this day are masters, I will work on digitizing, rebalancing, and synching them up. expect those sometime in the future.

Rabid Lassie- Battle of the Bands, 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 6/14/87 Lossless xfer from Master VHS

Here’s another one from Chris Eng’s master tape of Battle of the Bands. I was cleaning the studio yesterday and I saw that Wayne Vanderkuil has a high bias audio cassette from this show- I need to check and see if that is also a master, then put these together. I’ll add it to the to do list.
Rabid Lassie were from San Ramon, California. Members went on to be in straight edge band Breakaway. They released 1 demo. Guitarist Jason Hammon played in a number of bands including Downfall, who released a track on Lookout Records’ “can of pork” comp.
