Janis Ian- Coach House, San Juan Capistrano Ca 6/28/95 xfer from DAT Master Coresound Mics

So I had jokingly mentioned that I typically post content that does not get many views on Monday, so I could call it “Mediocre Monday” where I post not-so-great or obscure recordings. I think I’ll do Mediocre Monday from here on out.
I had thought that this one turned out kinda lousy, but it sounded way better than I remembered… so much for Mediocre Monday today I suppose. My other 2 recordings sound much better though, and you can hear the between song dialog much better there. I’ll get those up one day.
If you are wondering why I am posting a Janis Ian show, it’s because I like her music a lot.

Pavement- E-Werk, Cologne, Germany, 6/26/95 Full Set

Uploaded by: James Grimes.

No lineage or taping info provided. Perhaps this is known, but it wasn’t included in the YouTube footage. As I do some digging, I will add the information here.

Pavement has been featured before on SMA, but not thoroughly. As they formed in Stockton, they of course qualify for inclusion here. A thorough examination of their available output will probably require many, many hours, but as I encountered a tape of the audio (inferior quality to what was online already, sometimes that’s how it goes) for this show while working on other things, I figured including it here would be helpful.

Crash and Britany- Polo Field, Golden gate Park San Francisco 6/24/95 xfer f/DAT Sacramento Rock emo

You get 1 video and 2 audio posts today, so I had better get started. This is from Anonymous 2’s collection. Crash and Britany were a 90s indie/emo band from Sacramento with Huy Ngo, Kelly Slusher, and Mike Thiemann. This was probably the biggest show they ever played- they snagged the opening slot for the Pearl Jam/Neil Young show at Golden Gate Park.

It is an audience tape and it sounds pretty decent. I wonder who Anon 2 got this from- I don’t think he taped with DAT and it sounds like a coresound or similar type of taping setup. Hmmm.

Battalion of Saints- Backroom, Lawrence KS 6/23/95 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape

You get a quick two-fer today. First is the On This Date post. This is another one from Jim Utz’ collection of VHS tapes that he sent me many years ago. I had 2 copies of this- one from Jason Ross and one from Jim. Jason’s says the venue is the Backroom, Jim’s says Bottleneck. I did some digging and it does seem to be Backroom.
In my humble opinion, BoS were untouchable in the mid-80s with Chris Smith on guitar. After Chris left the band then passed away, the band has continued in different incarnations but nobody can really replace Chris. I wish there was more video with him playing. Any BoS is still great though.

Yo La Tengo- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca 6/20/95 xfer f/DAT FM Master Live Studio

I mentioned this before, but it’s relevant to the post today. I lived in Whittier California from 1992-1995 and didn’t go to nearly enough concerts since I was raising a family. I was also just outside of a decent signal for KCRW, so anything I taped there would be super staticky.
Thankfully, my good friend Kevin Haynes lives closer to the station and was able to get a nice signal. I would call him on occasion (no email for me back then) and ask him to tape certain things.. and that is the only reason that this tape exists. It’s a full session with them playing live in studio, preceding their show at the Alligator show that night. So, thanks to Kevin for this one.

Audio Live Performance

Yo La Tengo- Alligator Lounge, Santa Monica Ca 6/20/95 Xfer from master video tape + DAT Audio Enhan

So let’s hope this stays up for a while… Matador seems to get excited about taking down videos.. so here’s a message from me to Matador video takedown person:
“Hi! My channel is not monetized- please claim away and make your money. I also shot video and recorded audio with permission. I am merely posting to share a historical document, nothing more… and it’s not like you are going to release this or anything!”

Anyway, here’s another one of the old 8mm videos that gets the full enhancement treatment via Adobe Premiere/Izotope/Pluraleyes. So happy to finally create final versions of these, after 25 years. This is the best show I have ever seen from YLT.

Video Equipment used: Sony TR-81 camcorder
Audio Equipment used: Sony TCD-D7 DAT
Video enhance (noise reduction) via Premiere Elements/Neat Video
Audio rebalance (boost bass and guitar a lot) via Izotope
Audio/video synch via Pluraleyes
Thanks to Kevin Haynes for watching the DAT while I was up front videotaping. I wonder what happened to that guy?

The Walkabouts- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica Ca live in studio 6/19/95 xfer f/1st gen cassette

One from my collection today. This was part of my KCRW digitizing prject that I did for the station a couple months back. It’s also my first post to the pacific northwest music facebook group after getting the old account disabled. I had over 100 posts under my old profile. Ugh, there goes my top contributor badge.

Fairport Convention- Karlshmann Fest, Sweden 6/17/95 xfer from DAT Master Clone FM Soundboard

I had a lot of stuff to choose from for today’s On This Date in History, but I felt like hearing this one. It was mislabeled as Germany on the tape list, but I searched around online and discovered that this fest actually takes place in Sweden. Nice sounding FM broadcast.
Fun Fact- Black Sabbath played this same fest in 1995. I wonder if a DAT FM recording exists of that set? I don’t have it unfortunately.

Audio Live Concert

D.I.- Showcase Theater, Corona Ca. 6/11/95 Part 1 Punk Casey Royer

This video kinda bummed me out. This show was packed and they were amazing… but since my Sony TR81 camcorder tends to have lousy audio, I decided to plug in my coresound mics in to the camera… BAD IDEA. The camera was not made for the mics so it was even more distorted. You can still make out the songs, so here you go.
