Slayer- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 4/12/85 xfer from master audio cassette Thrash Metal Kerry King

I am a little late, but it is still TMDT- Tour Manager Doug Tuesday.
A couple weeks back, I mentioned that I had just a few slayer things left from Doug’s collection and it should bring us right up to the week of their show here in Sacramento next month. Well, as I was doing the “check out” process of ensuring I had every tape digitized, a CD burned for each show, and a post complete or ready… I realized that there were about 10 more tapes that I still needed to do, including one from a legendary location that the old school guys (Especially the Old Bridge east coast dudes) will like. So you still see TMDT for the rest of the year.
One of the tapes was this one. I knew that there were recordings circulated from this show, but I did a close A/B comparison of the Venom set, and these appear to be Doug’s masters. I can hear his voice heckling Cronos on the Venom show, haha. Not sure why this is incomplete, but this is all that was on the tape.

Venom- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 4/12/85 xfer from master audio cassette Black Metal

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! I am pretty sure Doug taped this one- I think I hear him heckling the band at times. Pretty much all Venom recordings from this tour sound terrible due to the stage volume that they were pushing along with 1980s sound systems trying to keep up… but this one sounds better than most.

Venom- Kabuki Theater, San Francisco Ca. 4/12/85 Audio Only xfer from low gen audio cassette

I wasn’t planning on posting this one, but I gave this another listen while prepping the disc for Eric and it sounds pretty good for a 1985 Venom tape!
This is yet another gen from Eric Mcintire’s collection.

Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force- Kabuki, San Francisco 1/11/85 xfer from master tape

Here’s another Doug tape for you all- it looks like there was a partial version of this show out there, but no complete ones. It is hard to tell if the other one on YT is the same recording as this- the other one sounds very different, cuts in mid-show and has a bunch of tape hiss and hum. This one is clean and complete. Thanks Doug!
I did not know that YJM played any shows in the US in early 85- I saw him at the Crest in June of 85. Apparently he came over twice to play/tour.

Raven- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 7/7/84 xfer from master audio cassette Heavy Metal NWOBHM

I was trying to decide between this show or a Slayer show that Tour Manager Doug taped… then I saw that it was John Gallagher’s birthday yesterday, so Raven it is! I am a huge fan of early Raven, so this is awesome. This is another show that I would have attended if I was just a year or 2 older.
I could not find any images related to the show, so I decided to use this flyer from their appearance at the Record Exchange in Walnut Creek the next day. Man, I loved that store. I spent so much of my money there when I was a teenager. They would send me a box of records in the mail C.O.D. (cash on delivery for you youngsters). You would then pay the mail carrier for the items. Wild man, Wild!
This one sounds pretty damned good, post-EQ. Thanks Doug!!

Exodus- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 7/7/84 xfer from master audio cassette bay area thrash metal

Another Doug recording to round out the week of audio posts. I just looked through the box of tapes that I have not done yet and there is a ton of Slayer and Exodus left to go. It’s unbelievable. Stay tuned…
I pushed the EQ on this one a lot- there was some high end distortion that I had to get out of there. The odd vocal in/out phasing is that way on the (pre-EQ) tape. What a show- Exodus, Anthrax w/Turbin, then Raven when they were one of the best bands around.

Anthrax- Kabuki, San Francisco Ca 7/7/84 xfer from master audio cassette Neil Turbin Thrash Metal

I just saw a facebook post from Charlie Benante that it was Scott Ian’s birthday on 12/31. Wow, imagine having that date as a bday- there’s always a party. It looks like they had a good time…
Here is a show from Tour Manager Doug where Anthrax were most definitely NOT having as good of a time (get it? NOT). People who were at this show told me that a couple of band members came out in leopard print spandex/stretch pants and the spit started to fly. Man, the bay area did that “de-posering” of out of town bands a couple of times that I am aware of with Slayer’s “take off the makeup” show and this. Well done, guys.
I EQ’d this one as best as I could, but it sounds similar in quality to the exodus set. Regardless, I am still super grateful of Doug to tape these- I had only ever seen B&W photos of this show from Metal Mania.

Michael Schenker Group- Kabuki Theater, San Francisco Ca 3/22/84 xfer from master audio cassette MSG

Another Doug tape for you here. It looks like there is some kind of CD bootleg out there of this show that touts “perfect sound”, but I haven’t heard it. I wonder if it is similar to the Yngwie Kabuki show from 1985 I posted recently– the bootleg of that show was clearly a different recording.
