Camper Van Beethoven- River Theater, Guerneville Ca 7/23/89 xfer from 8mm master tape Full show raw

Another surprise for today’s On This Date in History- I thought I had posted this right when I started this channel but apparently not.
Camper van Beethoven was my favorite band in 1989- I was so excited when Jackson Haring (CVB’s long time manager) gave me the OK to video. Usually, when a band gets signed to a major label, that was the death of video permission…
My excitement shows in the video. I am a little too jumpy with the camera work, especially at the start. I do settle down a little. The video is dark and grainy- this one really needs a new transfer and denoise. Someday soon. Anonymous was also there and his WMD6C tape sounds way better than my audio. Another lady (I cannot remember her name) also filmed the show and I think she might have sent me her master tape? It would be great to improve this as much as possible and repost. Given time constraints, this is all for today.
Fun fact: Even though CVB were well established and had 2 albums out on Virgin, Psychefunkapus insisted in headlining the show. I also have that video…

Psychefunkapus- River Theater, Guerneville, Ca 7/23/89 xfer from 8mm master tape

Bonus post! Here is the 3rd and final post for the day. Jon Axtell from Psychefunkapus asked for his band’s set to be posted. He also let me know that they did not insist on headlining, David from CVB suggested that they headline because they played so loud!
Again, one day these will get a lossless transfer and the whole lighting and exposure/contrast fix. For now, it’s dark.

NOMEANSNO – River Theater, Guerneville Ca. 2/19/89 xfer from 8mm master!

This was such a great lineup- Operation Ivy, NOMEANSNO and Firehose. River Theater was a trek from Sacramento, but this one warranted the drive. I know Jason Ellis was with me, was Mike Yoas there as well? I am posting this one because I heard that NOMEANSNO announced that they are not playing together as a band anymore. They were a great, energetic band. I have no idea why I decided to video this handheld from the back of the place. Sorry for the shakiness. Now that I think back, I don’t think I bought a tripod until shortly after this. Filmed with Aiwa CV80 and stock mic

Psychefunkapus- River Theater, Guerneville Ca. 2/19/89 xfer from master audiocassette

So the lineup for this show was Operation Ivy/NOMEANSNO/fIREHOSE… and psychefunkapus. Which one seems to be an odd booking? It seems like “the pus” got a lot of bookings at the River Theater. I did not go to a lot of shows there and I saw them play 2 shows there as one of the openers.

Here is another Anonymous recording- this one sounds way better than my video soundtrack. I used the stock microphone until April or May of 1989. This never circulated as far as I know

Operation Ivy- River Theater, Guerneville Ca. 2/19/89 xfer from master tape w/ NEW audio enhanced

Hm, it looks like I never posted my Operation Ivy master from River Theater. There are a bunch of posts of this show on youtube, but none of them are right off the master tape. I also enhanced it (brightened/contrast/denoise), remixed “Anonymous” master audio recording of the show, and King Bean did the audio/video synch. It is still dark (my camera did not like the soft/low lighting of River thtr), but this will probably be the definitive version.

Condemned Attitude- River Thtr, Guerneville 3/22/87 xfer from band VHS with soundboard audio enhance

Here is an EARLY but cool post today. I was good friends with the guys in condemned attitude so they lent me their copy of the vhs tape of the show. I also got a soundboard tape either from them, or in trade from Ron Quintana.
Now that we have good hardware (vhs decks and cassette decks) and software(Adobe premiere and neat video, isotope rx), we can make this one somewhat better than before.

Here is a super short but rare clip of Wehrmacht from 1987. This comes from a 1st gen copy off Condemned Attitude’s VHS tape of the show. This 3min is all that exists, as far as I know.
