D.R.I.- Ventura Theater, Ventura Ca 1/16/11 xfer from MiniDV Master w/Interview R.I.P. Josh Parten

I met Josh Parten back in 2014 when I filmed his band (Mass Terror), opening for English Dogs at Gilman. He used to film shows way back so we became fast friends. It was a shock to hear of his passing. He sent me a box of about 30 DV master tapes in 2015 which I digitized for him. I just looked this one up and it doesn’t look like he posted it. I will add Josh to the Collections rotation and post all of the videos he sent me. He actually contacted me later and we talked about doing more of his tapes but it never happened.
This one includes Josh interviewing 2 members including Harald O.

D.R.I.- Chain Reaction, Anaheim Ca 9/25/10 xfer f/master DV tape complete show DRI Dirty Rotten Imbe

I am late on everything today. We are grabbing another one from Josh Parten’s master tapes for today’s on this date in history. This time, it’s DRI from Anaheim in 2010.
I checked online and it looks like there are 2 other angles of this show, including one from my old pal Ryan from Vulture Video. It might make sense to do a multicamera someday.

D.R.I.- Ramona Mainstage, Ramona Ca 12/18/09 xfer f/DV Master Tape DRI Dirty Rotten Imbeciles Full

I am pretty sure that this is from Josh Parten’s collection (R.I.P.). I had it on my list as a Vulture Video master, but 1. Ryan didn’t post it on his channel, and he usually posts his masters and 2. The audio is distorted in the same way that many of Josh’s videos are, and 3. it is in 480p. Hopefully someone can help confirm that.

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles- Cactus Club, San Jose Ca 3/24/01 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape Complete Show

For today’s On This Day in History, I pulled this one off of a DVD that I received in a trade. I don’t know who filmed the show, and I can’t remember who I got it from. Looks like “Anarchy Video” is at the end of the video. Funny thing is that the interview at the end of this video is on youtube, but the live set isn’t.
Posting this now, and then something completely opposite of this later today. It’s a “choose your adventure” monday.

D.R.I.- Numbers or Axiom,Houston Tx 10/30/88 xfer f/1st gen VHS tape Complete Dirty Rotten Imbeciles

I have mentioned Mike Elias(sp?) before- he is/was a character who we traded videos with- he used to blatantly film bands without permission- and if he got caught/shut down, he would write me “those guys are essholes”(he would send me letters with these grievances). He definitely had a unique approach. If anyone knows where he is now, please let me know.

I have found 3 different references regarding the venue for this show- Mike’s info and newspapers dot com show it as a venue called numbers. metallipromo has a hand written flyer that shows Axiom. I am going with Numbers.

Jim Utz and I both traded tapes with Mike, and this one comes from Jim’s collection. Clearly audience shot with a bunch of heads in the way. At least it sounds good.

D.R.I.- The Farm, San Francisco Ca 10/25/86 xfer from master Soundboard cassette DRI Dirty Rotten

Late post today but it is a good one. This is from James R Edmonds’ master tape. The raw mix started out pretty good, but then guitar overpowered the mix- it was all you could hear. I did everything I could to bring up bass, vocals and drums in Izotope and it sounds pretty decent. This is peak D.R.I. — that 85-86 time frame was untouchable.

Rebalance in Izotope Rx8: Vocal +9, Bass and Drum +10, guitar -1. Yeah, it was that extreme.

D.R.I.- Sherwood Hall, Salinas Ca. 2/21/86 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette tape full show DRI

Since I posted the Slayer set yesterday, I figured that I would post DRI’s opening set today. I was so pumped for the D.R.I. set as they had quickly become my favorite band at the time. The crowd did not appreciate them- you can hear Kurt mention that they were getting harassed a bit. They were great and the set is a great mix of Dirty Rotten and Dealing with it. Ricky always did a nice job recording shows, he was a good guy.

Happy New Year! I hope 2026 is amazing for you all.
Man, did Wayne Vanderkuil bail my ass out for an On This Date post today. There aren’t many shows that happen on New Years Day, and my tape list is riddled with hundreds of “jan 1 yyyy” entries since that was the default for something that happened on an unknown date within a particular year… I couldn’t find anything.

But Wayne labeled this tape “DRI Ruthie’s 1/1/86” since the bands played after midnight, so I am running with it. Here is Wayne’s master from after midnight on a new years eve show. It sounds great, especially after an EQ job. Thanks Wayne!

2 more weeks of this On This Date nonsense and we can move on to something else.

This is going to be a TL/DR. Sorry.
Josh Pappe passed away. I did not know him well, but I met him a few times and partied with him at the infamous Discharge Club Can’t Tell show. He was a nice guy. My friend Matt Polish was friends with him. He was the bass player responsible for my favorite D.R.I. era.
A lot of punk musicians/fans my age have been hit with health problems lately, with Reed and now Josh passing away. It makes me think about my own mortality and my place in life now, especially since I didn’t take great care of myself in my teenage years. Hoping I am around for a while for my kids, especially the 9 and 4 year old.
On to the details about the recording. This comes from Eric Mcintire’s collection- thanks for trusting me with the tapes. I worked on this for about an hour in Izotope RX to boost guitar/bass/drums and to remove hiss. Eric, that’s why it is taking me so long! If you all heard the original version, you would be shocked at the difference.
Izotope RX is an unbelievable tool- it takes audio and allows you to rebalance the instruments. I can’t believe something like this exists, and now I am going to be busy for YEARS remixing my old DAT soundboards. Haha.
HUGE thanks to Carl Sylvester for telling me about the app.
