Bad Religion- Senator Theater, Chico Ca. 10/8/23 4K UHD Master w/ Schoeps Audio

After attending/video’ing a lovely wedding last Sunday, I headed over to Chico to see Bad Religion. I know I totally bagged on this venue back in March and proclaimed that I will NEVER return, but I figured that I could get my camera in to this show vs. the Fox in Oakland… and I was right. And the sound wasn’t that bad this time!
The show was packed- it must have been sold out or close to it. I realized that I was way too close to the stage when the show started, which is why you see a lot of obstructions. It gets a lot better later on- I was able to back up, and the venue floor slopes up! Perfect!
The crowd was crazy- from Jay Bentley’s comments, it sounds like BR rarely comes to Chico and they were surprised at the enthusiasm. “Chico, who woulda thunk?”- Jay.

Old 97s- Senator Theatre, Chico Ca. 3/27/23 4K UHD Master w/ DPA 40661 audio Complete Show

Alright. First of all, I REALLY appreciate live music venues in general. The ones who were able to survive the COVID lockdowns need and deserve your support. I rarely have anything negative to say about any venue- most are pretty good. I had this long rant about the venue here that I deleted. Never mind. Support live music.

I had brought all of my cameras, but after assessing the environment at the show, I only shot with the GH5S. Sorry about the audio, these are my nice DPA mics. I did my best…. and I shot the Roseville show with 6 4K cameras and it sounds MUCH better, so stay tuned!
Thanks always to the band for 25 years of friendship and being so cool with my exploits.

The Empty Gate- The Maltese, Chico Ca. 4/19/19 Multicam with Rode audio Vomit Launch

It has been almost 30 years since I had seen Trish Rowland- the last time we were in the same room was 10/16/92 at the Cattle Club. Sam Habash and I trekked up to Chico to see her new band (The Empty Gate) play a show. She remembered me and we had a nice chat- she has always been so nice. Some things never change. 🙂

Sneeze Attack- The Maltese, Chico Ca. 4/19/19 Multicam with Rode audio

Me and my friend Sam went up to Chico to see The Empty Gate (Trish from vomit launch’s new band) and who do I run into? Sac’s own Sneeze Attack! How cool is that? This was their first show back after a long layoff. In fact, I think it was the first show in this incarnation of the band.

Barbara Manning & Et Cetera- Childrens Park at City Center, Chico Ca 9/28/03

I had a bunch of choices for today’s On this Date in History- a Toad the Wet Sprocket DAT soundboard from 1997, Naked Raygun from Anti-Club, Poi Dog Pondering from WXRT, but then I saw this one.

I don’t know how I missed this semi-local show- I was pretty busy with the kids and travelling a lot so maybe that was why. I am so glad someone taped it. This is one of my all-time favorite Barbara shows. It was one of those free “concert in the park” type things that the city puts on. First of all, she had a brand new band- this is their debut gig after the Go-Luckys dissolved. The solo mini-set at the beginning was what grabbed me- a cover of the Handsome Family’s “Butterflies (too much wine)”, right into Gram Parson’s “$1000 Wedding” plus “Bold Letters” later on. Then the band comes up and play a much mellower set than what the Go-Luckys did to start and then rocks at the end, including some covers at the end she had never played! Really awesome.

Slobberbone- LaSalle’s, Chico Ca. 1/22/03 xfer from master tape!

Happy Friday everyone. I am posting 2 videos today, and neither one is a local band or local venue. I have more coming next week from Cattle Club, Spankys (!) and more. This is one of my 3 favorite alt-country bands. Slobberbone skipped Sacramento and only played the bay area and Chico, so I hoofed it to Chico to see them. The video cuts in on a great cover of “Don’t Cry No Tears”, as I was having some trouble with the DAT machine at the soundboard (meaning, I FORGOT A TAPEW. DUH.). Audio is choppy for the first 45 seconds and then cleans up. I start zooming with the camera about 8min in. Filmed with the JVC DV camcorder and stock mic.

Blood for Blood- Brick Works, Chico Ca 9/23/02 xfer from VHS-C Master Tape Enhanced Boston Hardcore

Here’s a rare one today from Dwayne Triggs- his VHS-C master tape of Blood for Blood in Chico 20ish years ago. One of the 3 VHS-C tapes that he brought over was stuck in one of those battery-powered VHSC-to-VHS adapters and I could not get it out. I ended up breaking the adapter apart to get to the tape. Sorry.
Anyway, here is Blood for Blood’s set opening for Sick of it All.

Sick of it All- Brick Works Chico Ca 9/23/02 Lossless xfer from VHS-C Master Tape Enhanced NYHC

Here is Sick of it All’s headlining set from Brick Works. The lighting on this one can be a bit intense and overexpose at times- that was a “feature” of this club. I remember filming the Old 97s there once and the same thing happened to me. Nice video and good close-up camerawork by Dwayne Triggs.
