The Enemies- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 7/22/00 xfer from master/1st gen soundboard tape Lookout Record

Here’s one from Arica Pelino’s audio cassette collection today. I know I just posted a video of hers last week, but she was also up for audio.

The Enemies played their first show in about 10 years (9 years, 11 months) this past Saturday at BOB fest at Gilman. All of the bands were great that night, but The Enemies were mind-blowingly next level great. I don’t know if it was because Mike’s daughters were side stage, singing their hearts out or what, but it was one of the best sets I have seen this year… if not THE best.

I video’d that show, but it’s not even close to being ready yet so here is a show from about 25 years ago. The mix was not perfect on this one, so I rebalanced it to bring up guitars and vocals. It gets better after about 2 minutes.

Rebalance in Izotope Rx8: Vocal +3, Bass +5, Guitar +3.

Pitch Black- 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 7/22/00 xfer f/low gen soundboard cassette Lookout Records Punk

Collections post from Arica Pelino today. Just FYI to all the Green Day fans who are awaiting more posts of the band, Arica asked to save that for the end of the project. So stay tuned, but it’s gonna be a bit. Listen to some new bands.
This one was a puzzle. The tape was labeled “black” instead of Pitch Black. So off I went to discogs to try to find a band called “black”. Then tried internet searches “black east bay punk band”, which yielded a bunch of great bands but not the one I was looking for.
Then I figured I would check The List. Jon Luini made a searchable database from the list and it has saved my ass multiple times. I knew The Enemies played the show, and there it was. PITCH Black. And they had a split 7″ w/ The Enemies on Lookout as well.
The mix is not great to start on this one. The guitar comes up in the mix about halfway through, so I could not do too much with it or I would drown the 2nd half of the mix in guitar. I boosted the bass +15db(!) and it didn’t seem to do much. Gotta have the instrument in the mix to fix it, I suppose.

Subincision- KALX Live in Studio, Berkeley Ca. 7/1/00 xfer from pre-fm cassette

Here’s one of the better sounding KALX in-studios I have heard. The quality and mix definitely improved over the years.
Subincision were an East Bay punk band who had a few albums out on Substandard Records in the late 90s/early 2000’s. This incarnation of the band included John Mendiola, Cory Moore, Mike Montoya, and Pat McMains.
