Weston- Columbus Club, Appleton Wi 10/30/95 xfer f/master VHS tape Pop Punk Pennsylvania

It’s time for today’s video collections post- this one comes from Jason Ross’ collection. I had digitized this one quite a while ago but I kept finding a lot of Jason’s videos for the On This Date project, so this kept getting pushed out. Someone even asked for it way back- here it is, finally.

Weston were an American pop-punk / indie rock band from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The band was formed in 1990 and named after original member Dave Weston.

Helium- Riviera Theater, Chicago Il 10/26/95 xfer from 1st gen VHS Tape Boston indie Rock

The first of not one, not two but THREE videos today! That’s crazy!
Today’s On This Date in History comes (once again) from Jim Utz’ collection of VHS tapes that I digitized years ago. There was a person who followed Sonic Youth around in 1995 and video’d a bunch of their shows. I have the Sonic Youth set from this show, but I chose this because it seems that Helium shows from 1995 are not too common.

The Jayhawks- Troubadour, W. Hollywood Ca. 10/22/95 Xfer from Hi8 Master improved audio Black Crowes

Thanks to Heinz Vlatin for the better audio. The improved audio source is missing the first 4 songs, so if anyone has a complete set of decent audio, we are still looking!
Includes the encore with Chris Robinson.

Harriet the Spy- 1022 Smith St, Green Bay WI 10/22/95 xfer f/Master VHS tape Kent Ohio Emo Hardcore

Here’s one from Jason Ross’ collection. That basement at 1022 Smith sure got some bands who had some staying power. AFI (obviously), and these guys. If this is the same Harriet the Spy from Kent Oh, they still have a big following to this day. Wild.

The Jayhawks- Troubadour, W. Hollywood Ca 10/22/95 xfer Hi8 Master tape Chris Robinson Black Crowes

Here’s another awesome document from Steve Rogers. The classic Louris/Olson Jayhawks lineup with an appearance by Chris Robinson during the encores! If anyone has better audio, please let me know. I checked archive.org and 10/20 is up there, but not this show.

Belly- American Theatre, St. Louis Mo 10/21/95 xfer f/master VHS tape Multicamera KDHX Double Helix

I could have sworn that this show was up on YT already. I searched for it about 10 different ways and I can’t find it, so here you go. This is a good way to pre-game for Belly’s tour that starts this week! Lots of songs from KING on here, and they are playing that album in its entirety on this go round. Can’t wait, I have been a huge fan of that one since 1995.
The audio on this one is not great, unfortunately. It sounds like a raw board mix which was light on guitar plus whatever the crew could pull from the audience mics. Still enjoyable. I appreciated Double Helix so much- they were pioneers in doing stuff like this.

The Dickies- El’N Gee Club, New London Ct 10/16/95 xfer from 1st gen VHS tape

This is yet another video from Jason Ross’ collection for today’s On This Date in History. This one is pretty cool- the quality is good for a 90s video and the camera man is right up front. The downside is that you only see one side of the stage- the poor guitar player on the right finally makes an appearance on screen about halfway through! Also, the audio suffers a bit from the filmer’s position. They were getting mainly stage volume so not much vocal.

From the newspaper article I found, it looks like they played with D Generation. I hope that tape is in Jason’s collection as well!

Gojira- 1022 Smith st, Green Bay Wi. 10/14/95 xfer from master VHS tape Midwest Punk

Before everyone gets all excited, this is not the French metal band who played Aftershock a few years back and the Olympics last year. This is a midwest band who had the name before the famous one did. Not sure if they had any recorded output. I don’t see them on discogs, unless Gojira (6) is them.

Snap-Her: 924 Gilman, Berkeley Ca 10/13/95 xfer from 1st gen soundboard cassette tape

Here’s another band I had not heard until now. It looks like they were from L.A. and were active from 1993-2002.. and I lived in the L.A. area from 1992-95. There was always a LOT going on down there and I missed so much good stuff.
Anyway, some of the members were in bands with some facebook friends. It looks like Andi Beltramo, the vocalist/guitarist, was in the Creamers with RJ Gallentine right before forming this band… and drummer Suzy (homewrecker) Owens was in Hollywood Hate with Scotty Wilkins.. but that was almost 10 years after this show.
