Continuing the rotation from the collections I am digitizing over here. Here is another one from Jason Ross’ collection. More early WFMU goodness. Jason got this from a guy named Matt who taped this off the radio in NJ. Matt didn’t trade a whole lot so this one might be uncirculated. It sounds pretty damned good. Oh, and for the lookout records group- my old fb account was hacked and I do not have access to it currently. This is another account I used to keep the daily posts going, please friend me here if you’d like.

I love The Freeze. It makes me happy that they are active again and Bill is playing in the band again- can’t wait until they finally make it up our way. Most of the shows have been in AZ or southern Cal. So that’s why I decided to post this questionable quality video today. I have no idea who filmed it or what the lineage is- I pulled it off punktorrents, back when I had time for that kind of nonsense.
OK, back to the Uncle Tupelo archive. Here’s a nice quality soundboard from around their peak (in my opinion). Nice covers of Cheap Trick and Neil Young for the encore.

Alright, since we are already giving away cool Gilman stuff (see video from earlier today), let’s share this one for today’s On This Date in History. We are not even CLOSE to being done with Arica’s collection. In fact, I recently digitized a tape with no markings on it- just a generic no label tape- and it had Green Day and Black Fork on it! What is it- who knows? We need to figure it out… Anyway, here is a tape that was labeled- Green Day played Gilman on Friday the 18th and Sunday the 20th of October in 1991. This was at the time that the Oakland Hills fire started to burn. I talked to Arica today and she and Billie Joe had to detour just to make it to the show!

This was a memorable night. Craig Hilmer was in town fromt he midwest. We had traded tapes for years but this was the first time we met face to face. The Bernat brothers came up from San Diego for the occasion as well. We were trying to figure out what to do for the night. I was lobbying to see Penelope at Starry Plough because both the artist and venue are awesome, and the Bernats were trying to persuade Craig to go to Beat Farmers at Slim’s. We decided on Penelope. I had a few too many pints and crashed on Craig’s hotel room floor. I woke up the next day extremely hung over and drove home while the Oakland hills were on fire. Very surreal. Penelope played 2 sets, almost 2 hours of music and no repeats. Great stuff!

Here is the first of many rare and previously uncirculated Green Day tapes from Arica Pelino’s archive. Huge thanks to Arica for bringing them over and handing them off to me last month. I am going to let Arica introduce this one: “this show has only been released on audio format prior to this. This video is being released in its entirety for the first time and includes RARE after-show footage with:
Lint/Tim Armstrong Marshall Stax (on stage) Damon O’Manic Joel Wing Kaz Hope Anna Armstrong
Filmed by: Arica Pelino
Opening Bands: Blatz, Jack Acid, Alter Ego, Grimple” Transfer by: Shayne Stacy Equipment used: Panasonic AG-1980 — Datavideo TBC1000 – Tevion USB Adapter — Virtualdub Enhanced in Adobe Premiere Elements/Neat Video (lighting/denoise)
Here’s another show that happened about 30 years ago that I captured on DAT. Strange mix in the club- I was in a pristine spot to record, but guitars sound distant. I was so happy to catch the band on this tour- I loved the Never Loved Elvis album.

I am surprised about the lack of discussion around The Palms’ closing/indefinite hiatus announcement. The Davis venue was a magical place, probably my favorite venue ever. You could see renowned artists in an extremely intimate setting. Just drive to davis, get off the freeway, drive toward the 2 palm trees, park in the driveway of their home, and go into the barn. It seemed to bring out the best in the performer, along with respect from the audience. That’s why I picked this recording for today. Penelope (at times) played songs that were so soft that even low voices would interfere with the performance… but the crowd was so quiet… just amazing.
I’m going to miss The Palms.

Here is one from Arica Pelino’s collection that we were not planning to post at all, but a bunch of people saw the photo of the VHS tape with this show on there so here you go. There was a problem with the camera and the video is so overexposed on the master tape that you can’t see them at all. I did a couple of things to try to get it to the point where you could see the band. First, I adjusted the video filters in virtualdub so it would capture it with less exposure and some contrast upon digitizing the VHS. Then I popped it into adobe premiere and worked up the rest. I should show a screenshot of the original so you could see how much of an improvement this is, haha. Anyway, Maicon (green day brazil) sent over time stamps and noted that this is the first recorded performance of 2,000 Light Years Away. Thanks Maicon! And, as always thanks Arica!
