Yo La Tengo- Grass Valley Center for the Arts, Grass Valley Ca. 10/13/21 4K UHD Live Partial Set

If you read my daily posts, you probably notice that I don’t have much negative to say about bands or venues for the most part. They are all investing time and energy into entertaining us so they deserve props. I am going to make an exception to my self imposed rule.
Anonymous & I got to the venue pretty close to doors. I tried asking around(merch lady etc) for video permission but I could not get to anyone who had any authority to give permission. My 5 camera 4k multicam dreams were crushed again. We were having a beer while waiting for the band to start and one of the volunteers asked anonymous to pull his mask up between drinks. I am pro-mask and I do that normally (I was in florida over the summer), but damn… that is pretty heavy handed. The same volunteer asked us what the band plays- she thought they were a spanish band. We had to tell her to go get some earplugs. Haha.
Well apparently, while I went to my car to fetch my DSLR and grab something quick to eat, there were announcements that there are no photos allowed, don’t even remove your phone from your pocket. I get back and the band starts- I whip out the GH5S and start filming. Volunteer lady sees me and comes over:
Me: Oh, Hi! (thinking she would recognize me from earlier)
VL: Don’t you know there is no recording here?
Me: I am taking pictures (white lie- I was taking 30pics a second with sound)
VL (growing visibly agitated): Didn’t you hear the announcements? There are no pictures either!
Me: No, I wasn’t here for announcements! (This was the truth. I was inhaling a pretzel at the bar down the street)
At least I got 12 minutes before I was spotted. So, don’t expect any more videos from this place. Too bad because they had a nice stage setup and good sound.
By the way, YLT were so snoozy in the first set that I fell asleep 5 times. This is not an exaggeration- I conked.

Yo La Tengo- Maxwell’s, Hoboken NJ 12/5/02 MiniDV Master-DVD KISS Velvet Underground Richard Hell

Very busy day so I am late with the posts. Today’s On This Date is one you don’t want to miss. I wonder if this was the precursor to the run of Hanukkah shows that they do now. Covers from KISS, Velvet Underground, Richard Hell and more! The actual set of their songs is very good too- not too snoozy.

Yo La Tengo- WFMU Live in Studio Fund Raising Benefit,E Orange NJ 3/13/99 COVERS VHS Hifi Master-DAT

Here’s another really unique thing for On This Day in History. For many years, Yo La Tengo has helped WFMU raise money by playing live in studio for a couple hours during their fund raising telethons. The fun twist is this- if you donate $50, they will play any cover you request; or for $100, they will play an actual Yo La Tengo song. So you get a ton of coevrs and at least 1 YLT song that I heard.
This is the full 2 hour and 10 session, including the DJ discussion in between songs. If you want to hear YLT only, skip forard to about 15 minutes.
It’s really a fun listen.
Oh and PS: I know that this photo is from the 2000 WFMU fundraiser, but it was the closest thing I could find to represent this.

Yo La Tengo- KCRW Brave New World, Santa Monica Ca 6/11/97 xfer f/ 1st gen audio tape live in studio

This one comes from my collection. This was one of the last audio tape trades I did in the late 90s. I can’t remember the person I got this from, but I received a bunch of KCRW/KROQ radio broadcast stuff that he taped.

This one is odd because the tape starts with an interview with James McNew while Ira & Georgia are playing ambient noise in the background. I think they interview other members while the ambience continues. They play some “real” songs later on.

Yo La Tengo- KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, Santa Monica Ca 6/20/95 xfer f/DAT FM Master Live Studio

I mentioned this before, but it’s relevant to the post today. I lived in Whittier California from 1992-1995 and didn’t go to nearly enough concerts since I was raising a family. I was also just outside of a decent signal for KCRW, so anything I taped there would be super staticky.
Thankfully, my good friend Kevin Haynes lives closer to the station and was able to get a nice signal. I would call him on occasion (no email for me back then) and ask him to tape certain things.. and that is the only reason that this tape exists. It’s a full session with them playing live in studio, preceding their show at the Alligator show that night. So, thanks to Kevin for this one.

Yo La Tengo- Alligator Lounge, Santa Monica Ca 6/20/95 Xfer from master video tape + DAT Audio Enhan

So let’s hope this stays up for a while… Matador seems to get excited about taking down videos.. so here’s a message from me to Matador video takedown person:
“Hi! My channel is not monetized- please claim away and make your money. I also shot video and recorded audio with permission. I am merely posting to share a historical document, nothing more… and it’s not like you are going to release this or anything!”

Anyway, here’s another one of the old 8mm videos that gets the full enhancement treatment via Adobe Premiere/Izotope/Pluraleyes. So happy to finally create final versions of these, after 25 years. This is the best show I have ever seen from YLT.

Video enhance (noise reduction) via Premiere Elements/Neat Video

Thanks to Kevin Haynes for watching the DAT while I was up front videotaping. I wonder what happened to that guy?

Yo La Tengo- Acoustic and interview in studio, Idiot’s Delight, WXRK, New York 5/10/92 3rd gen tape

For today’s on this date in history, I pulled this one. This is my favorite era of YLT, plus Vin Sclesa from Idiot’s delight is a great host and interviewer. Even though this is a 3rd gen tape, it’s totally worth a listen. Check it out.

This is my favorite YLT era as well- not too snoozy or effects-laden. Just good straight forward songs

Yo La Tengo- Cattle Club, Sacramento Ca. 4/18/92 xfer from DAT Soundboard Master Rebalanced band

I wasn’t planning on posting this one today, but the rebalance job turned out so good, I figured what the hell. Also, it is one of my favorite YLT performances ever.
It was a funny show, sound-wise. The first song is just the raw mix and it sounds great! Then Ira turns around and cranks his amp and launches into “Artificial Heart” and the mix just drops. So, you will hear the recording cut over to the rebalanced version at about 12:00. So, in summary= 0:00-12:30= sounds great. 12:30-13:00 sounds not so good, in transition. 13:00-fwd= the mix you’re gonna get for the rest of the show.

Rebalance in Izotope RX7, boost bass +6 or so, Guitar +4 I think

Yo La Tengo- CBGB, New York City 1/31/92 xfer from 1st gen audience cassette

For today’s “On This Day in History” post, I chose this Yo La Tengo set that I received from the taper. I had thought I got it from Jim Romeo (gloriously depicted in the Tom Courtenay video), but as I was trying to find an image for this post, I discovered that 1 track from this set was officially released AND it helped me remember an old trader friend. Double Dare (Sominextraction) from this set was released on the Big Day Coming 7″ and the notes helped me remember trading with Rich Baybusky, the taper of the show. I have close to 200 Yo La Tengo recordings on the ol’ tape list, and just about all of the early ones came from Rich and Jim.

Yo La Tengo- Mississippi Nights, St. Louis Mo 3/4/88 Proshot xfer from VHS Master Tape

So I had posted this one a long time ago and it was pulled down by matador. I am totally perplexed about it, since other yo la tengo content is allowed to survive on youtube. Does anyone know if this was ever part of an official release?

Anyway, here it is again. I don’t think it will be found by the evil overlords. Enjoy.
