Son Volt- Ziggy’s, Winston-Salem NC 2/29/96 xfer f/DAT Clone Complete Show Uncle Tupelo Jay Farrar

SMUD shut the power off at the Sac Music Archive for pretty much the entire day yesterday, so I am still playing catch-up with posts. This is LAST week’s Patreon voter’s choice- Patreon $10 and up members got to vote on a concert that took place on leap day- Feb 29. You know, to kinda close out the “on this date” project and complete the project by posting something from every date in a year.

Voters chose 2 shows- the vote was a tie. After some investigation, the Soul Asylum show that was voted in actually took place on 6/29, not 2/29 so that leaves this one. It’s a good one- this one is really nice quality. I loved this era of Son Volt- I saw 2 week-long runs in California around this time. One in December of 1995 and one in March of 1996, but none of my recordings are as nice as this one. Well done!

I have the taper of this show narrowed down to two people. I think it was Norwood, but it could have been Pemberton.

Audio Live Concert

Golden Smog- Twee Meter Session,Hilversium Holland 2/17/96 xfer 1st gen tape Tweedy Jayhawks 12/2/96

Today’s On This Day in History is a short one. Twee(2) Meter Sessions is a really cool independent music program from Holland. They have been recording live in-studio sessions since 1987. Golden Smog did one in 1996 and it seems that there is some date confusion. The tape I received (1st gen cassette-DAT-DAT) shows the date as 2/17/96, but the actual twee meter sessions website shows it as 12/2/96. This session is not on the program’s youtube channel, so it is possible they don’t even have a copy.

Audio Live Performance

Sublime- Hustlur Party, The Shack, Anaheim Ca 4/6/96 xfer from DV Master Bradley Nowell

I was going to do the On This Date post first, but copyright checks have been running for HOURS and are still running. Let’s do this one instead, from Guerin Myall’s collection. I owe Guerin a huge thanks for letting me not only digitize his DV tapes, but to post them as well. So cool.

Anyway, I am not 100% sure about the date and venue for this show, but this seems right. I mean, how many Hustlur parties could the band have played in a small venue at that time, right?

I think that parts of this performance were released on a Gutwrench Productions surfing video, but I don’t see the entire thing posted anywhere.

Live Concert Video

AC/DC- Arco Arena, Sacramento Ca. 2/5/96 xfer from 8mm master tape Enhanced

A couple months back, my old friend Gary Shurtleff(fromthenosebleeds yt channel) dropped off about 50 of his 8mm master tapes for transfer. I got through all of them and discovered that the PC I was using was glitching – just a few frames per tape but enough to make it imperfect… so I brought back the old Dell T3500 workstation and it took care of these, no problem. It sucked doing them twice but worth it in the long run.
Gary gave me the OK to post all of the Sacramento-based shows. I plan to enhance them before posting. Here’s the first one. AC/DC came to the much-hated Arco Arena Sac on their Ballbreaker tour in 96. It looks like there might a bit missing, as an audio recording of this show is over 2 hours.
Anyway, enjoy. Thanks Gary!
