Dead Kennedys- Keystone, Palo Alto Ca 2/17/86 xfer from master audio cassette

It’s Mediocre Monday again! Keeping with the theme of “incredibly rare stuff that may not sound perfect”, here is an apparently uncirculated Dead Kennedys tape from their end times. The last show (w/Jello) was at Freeborn Hall on 2/21/86. Concert archives shows their show at The Stone in SF on 2/16 being the 2nd to last… so this 2/17 show may actually be the 2nd to last show. Wow!
If you are wondering about the picture I chose for this show, this is apparently the former location of Keystone Palo Alto… which later became The Edge in the alternative heyday of the 90s.
It appears to cut off before the end- if I find a part 2 of this set, I will repost the whole thing.
Fun fact- the non-Jello version of the DKs have apparently played about 75% of all shows billed as “Dead Kennedys” according to concert archives. I guess that proves that quantity doesn’t trump quality. Haha, sorry.

7 Seconds- Keystone, Palo Alto Ca 2/17/86 xfer from master cassette tape hardcore

I’m late today- too much happening at work. No week would be complete without a tape from Wayne Vanderkuil’s collection. Here is 7 Seconds opening for Dead Kennedys at Keystone Palo Alto. Wayne also found this sweet photo of a Keystone match box, back when clubs and bars did that kind of thing.
I EQ’d this one and was able to pull bass out and boost it up. The guitar is mixed in with all that midrange, so no such luck there. Sounds pretty good for the equipment, venue and era.

Ronnie Montrose- Keystone, Palo Alto 12/30/84 xfer from master audio cassette

You get audio on this fine Friday, since you got video yesterday. This is another one from Doug’s box of fun (that sounds wrong). The quality is similar to the BOC posted recently- really nice. Those hard rock bands really had nice sound. I saw Deep Purple at the amphitheater a few years back and it was probably the best live sound I have ever heard.

Slayer- Keystone, Palo Alto Ca 10/15/84 xfer from master audio cassette thrash metal

It’s Wednesday and there have been no Doug posts yet this week- let’s fix that. This Slayer show goes to prove that even the greats play to an empty room sometimes. I am sure that it being a Monday night in Palo Alto didn’t help things much. Sounds like there are less than 100 people there. They still mowed through the set as usual, but damn. Tough crowd.
Thanks to Wayne Vanderkuil for finding this pink sheets listing for the show, no flyer seems to exist. Maybe THAT’s why nobody showed up…

Y & T (Yesterday and Today)- Keystone, Palo Alto Ca 6/11/84 xfer from master audio cassette

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Even though all of these aftershock recordings have thrown the rest of the schedule into chaos, you can depend on TMDT.. at least for the rest of the year or so.
Here’s a nice headlining set from Y&T. Could not find a flyer for the show so you get a nice match box as the photo.

Slayer- Keystone, Berkeley Ca 5/23/84 xfer from master audio cassette Thrash Metal

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! There were no TM Doug Slayer posts last week, for the first time in a while. Here’s one that appears uncirculated- it’s not on youtube, not on setlist.fm. I know one of the old school guys will chime in and say “I had it in the 80s, man”. So I guess I mean “uncirculated outside of the OG thrash traders”
I did my best with the EQ, there was no bass at all in the recording!

Megadeth- Keystone, Berkeley Ca 4/15/84 xfer from 1st gen audio cassette w/Kerry King from Slayer

This one is from Tour Manager Doug’s collection, but it seems that someone else named Mike taped it. Check my photo of the cassette on facebook for a pic of the actual tape. Doug knew how to spell “Megadeth” as well. Regardless, glad that Mike captured it!

Megadeth- Keystone, Berkeley 4/15/84 xfer from master audio cassette Thrash Metal Dave Mustaine TMDT

It’s Tour Manager Doug Tuesday! Here is the last Megadeth recording that I digitized for him, and it was the first show of a 3 night run in the bay area. these shows take place just 2 months after they played their first shows ever up in the bay.
This one is probably the best quality out of all the 1984 shows. The Stone and this one sound pretty nice.

Slayer- Keystone, Berkeley Ca 1/27/84 xfer from master audio cassette Thrash Metal

It’s Tour Manager Doug Thursday! Just kind of rolls off the tongue. Here is one with on of the funniest flyers ever… Hmmm.. I wonder which band was in charge of making this one? And the 1980s computerized “Slayer” at the bottom just kills me. Haha.

Armored Saint- Keystone, Berkeley Ca 11/25/83 xfer from master audio cassette opening for Metallica

Here’s another one from Doug’s box of tapes and .. surprise, it isn’t Exodus. I think this is the first week without an exodus post this year.
This tape EQ’d really well and sounds pretty nice. Nice and clear with no/minimal distortion. I really like that first Armored Saint EP, but I kinda lost track of them after that. This set is right in that EP era, so it was a fun listen.
